Avon Automotive closing: Coping with the loss of more than a 100 jobs. Posted: 3/27/2007 » View Picture » Play Video A Northern Michigan town deals with the looming loss of more than a 100 jobs this summer. In early February Avon Automotive announced it could no longer keep the plant open and was moving to Mexico. At a townhall meeting in Manton in Wexford county tonight, state representatives talked to people about the impact of the plant closing on the area and what options those laid off have. At least 100 workers at Avon Automotive will lose their jobs beginning in May because of the slumping auto industry. Up to 40 non-automotive jobs may move to the Cadillac plant. |

Johnlodge, most of the examples you listed are not good examples because it shows that many of these companies opened locations in France, Germany and other EC countries, where labor most definitely is not cheaper than in Michigan. |

Not just Detroit, but Livonia. Livonia lost SMART because of poor leadership in Lansing which does not care about workers and family values. It's time for Granholm to leave our state and take her illegal DARTA with her. This agreement violated union jobs and cost SMART the bus contract in Livonia. DARTA supporters came to Livonia and stated that SMART does not need any state funds to operate which made many residents very angry. So, they all went to vote NO to defeat Wal-Mart and not SMART because they wanted to Stay SMART and not become stupid. http://savethefueltax.tripod.c om/remain3.html |

The short answer is that what many of us do is a commodity, and the price of commodities always shoots through the floor when there's an abundance. The solution is... |

Another one: Emmet County Plant Closing Posted: 3/29/2007 About 100 workers will lose their jobs when a northern Michigan plant closes this year. Continental Structural Plastics plans to close its plant in Petoskey in Emmet county, and move to its other plants in Ohio and Louisiana. The company's vice president says freight issues are the main reason behind the closure. He says auto assembly plants are moving south and the government hasn't done anything to stop the trend. Auto companies don't want to pay expensive freight costs so suppliers like Continental Structural Plastic have to be closer. He says no date has been set for the closing but it will be before the end of the year. The company operates six other plants and some employees could be moved to positions there. |

It always stinks when people lose their jobs but it seems it would be more difficult for the families in smaller communties since there is a smaller pool of business and industry to find a replacement job. While unemployment is way too high statewide many in SE Michigan can find something else. I would suspect that many of these workers will be forced to relocate their families and lives. This state is in trouble state wide. Our 'leaders' in Lansing need to start working together because the partisan politics is not doing a damn thing. |

"No its not just affecting Detroit! Saturn is closing in Spring Hill, TN. too!" Actually I just read in AutoBeat Daily that Spring Hill will be getting a new chevy cross over vehicle for the 09 Model Year. They will close this summer for an 18 month Change over. |
