I just returned from Vegas, and had a chance to look at most of their casinos. The first thing that jumped out at me is how many things there are to do in the resorts other than gamble. Is there a chance that the new casinos will have even half of the attractions of the average Vegas casino |

Tetsua loves than Venitian gondola ride in the big box. He stood in line for an hr. to go to the top of an Eiffel tower in the desert. He just loved the smoking manholes at New York New York. And the water show at Bellagio, oy, what a show. So tell us more. jjaba, traveler, loves the neon signs all around Fremont Street. Really nice at night. |

Jjaba, remember when Greektown was going to do that same neon ceiling over Monroe Avenue in in Greektown? Their early plans had this (before Pappas and Gatzaros were booted by the gaming commission from Greektown Casino development). I kinda think it would have been way too garish for Greektown. |

Halifax Nova Scotia developed their waterfront featuring a casino, very nice, you're able to walk, eat, relax, go back in and lose more money. there's also shops, cafes, music in the summer...then across town is the Liquordome, but that's another story.... |

I goto to Vegas about once a Year and I always stay down on Fremont street. I think the light show is great. I missed where Greektown was going to do something like that. Not sure how that would have held up in the Winter, but would have been cool. I think the Best Vegas "theme" casino is NYNY. The smoking manhole covers do it for me. |

Gistok, Greektown has done just fine over these years. We can remember it in the 1940s, just an old rundown section of town. But it sure did come alive on Halloween when they blocked off Monroe Street so the transvestites could walk from bar to bar. We stood at the barriers and tried to spot them. It was great high school fun. With the new stadia and Foxtown, Greektown survives pretty well. No neon, please! jjaba. |

I liked the way that in Mandalay bay there was a huge aquarium inside the facility. Across the street at MGM Grand there was a Lion sanctuary. And EVERY casino / resort had a mall inside of it. I don't think there will be these types of huge attractions at the local casinos, but at the same time you have 4 casinos competing against one another. They're going to have to do something to stand out from one another, other than just provide rooms. |

Did Tetsua see the Chihuli glass in the Bellagio? Stunning. Actually, you can get a decent corned beef sandwich in Las Vegas. But they are not that easy to find. Las Vegas has a decent Chinatown too. The tour buses with Asians trade there. jjaba. |

The Bellagio was one of Mrs. Tetsua's favorites. The garden was a nice distraction. The shops were too rich for our blood though ... geez. |

Las Vegas is all about maxxing out the credit card, and emptying out our wallets. jjaba is still very unclear about any other reason for it being there. Bugsy Siegel and the boys sure had a great idea, eh. jjaba stays on Eldorado St. at Holiday Inn. They pick you up at airport in limo and it is off the strip for a decent night's sleep. You can park there for free if you drive in. Great location. Breakfast available and just minutes from the "action." Walk to shows at Hard Rock on on strip. jjaba, Westsider. |

2 years of non stop re development in the greater downtown area will give us the full walkability of a lively downtown center that can provide lots of entertainment for a typical casino patron. We have amazing history thats non comparable to even vegas. As long as we continue several re hab projects....eastern market, riverfront, campus mart, ren cen, riverwalk, comerica park, ford field, the list goes on and on. |

The point with the permanent casinos, is to have a structure so cool that the patrons don't want to leave. MGM, Motor City, Greektown, and Windsor are all competing, and the only walkability they want you to experience, is inside their own casino. That's why the casinos in Vegas are so over the top, and cool. They do everything they can to lure patrons in, and retain them when they get there. (Message edited by tetsua on March 26, 2007) |

"Actually, you can get a decent corned beef sandwich in Las Vegas. But they are not that easy to find." Weiss' Deli, Sunset and Green Valley Parkway. Absolutely the finest, hugest corned beef sandwiches in the world, packed on freshly-baked rye bread that is to die for. If you're renting a car while in town, make it a point to go there. |

Just Imagine just for a second that there are hundreds of thousands who are no fans of the make believe world of las Vegas. The circus acts dont appeal to everyone. But is a kick-ass Rock-n roll town like Detroit in 2009,we can be that great alternative. On any given Summer spring or fall weekend, Downtown Det will give a visitor all the booze dens of all variety, architecture,The river, parks with free music concerts, sporting events and top notch theater. Not to mention the interior design of MGM MAKE YOU NEVER WANT TO LEAVE |

Are all 3 casinos going to have their own theatre? I understand that MotorCity is going to have about 1,300 seats in their casino theatre. I haven't heard about the other 2. |

Oh, didn't know MC was owned by the Ilitches either (or at least they have a major share invested in it). Look at this photo of them from '58 holding Little Caesars Pizza. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I mage:Mike&MarianIlitch.jpg The first married couple that came to mind when I saw this picture was Al and Peg Bundy. I struggled to find hotel rooms on many weekends last summer. 2008 We'll have 1,200 awesome hotel rooms filled with entertainment.but wat makes our casinos unique,GReektown in particular,is they invite people to the outside, only to draw them back in.400 hotel rooms will now loom over our lil o'l greektown block that we never though could ever happen |

I agree with Tetsua that the Casino will try to make themselves self-sufficient so people don't feel they need to leave and walk around anywhere, but no matter what, this will fail. Caesar's Palace in Vegas is a massive complex with everything you can imagine in it these days, but who stays in it the whole time? There's too many other things to do and experience. |

Taylortucky prefers the Landing Strip out by Metro Airport. Don't kid yourself, they're not keen on coming downtown. They're too busy converting themselves to Mormonism. jjaba. |

Though technically not "corned beef" Jjaba should get his self to Montreal--if he hasn't already, and find his way to Schwartz's for Montreal Smoked Meat. |

With our current pace of redevelopment in greater downtown,That in itself is a major attraction.Spending a fun filled weekend in Detroit, You would get a great room at the MGM, see a great live show,go out to the club in the lobby, gamble for hours, use the amazing amenities, catch the shuttle to Motor city and stay for hours, shopping,an playing, catch a shuttle to the tigers game, get a walking tour of our many amazing historic buildings, and even a tour of our newly restored cork town and woodbridge districts (Detroit soon to be crowned secret Gay distric lol .)Henry Ford museum tour, hang out at the Ren Cen,dinner at Coach Insigna on top floor. Roller blade on the new River Walk, horse and buggie around belle isle(remember it's summer 2009)boat races on the river,a day in Windsor, cultural tour up Woodward, Start all over at Greektown,"OPA" during the art festival, change hotels on last night to Greektown casino hotel. Go to a free concert at the Latin festival at hart plaza, get all dressed up and go see Bette Midler at the opera house, and barbara streisand the next night a block away at the amazing FOX THEATER..WHO ELSE CAN OFFER so much in such a small area of the city? |
