Since Dialh4hipster started the "Dirty Movie" thread, how about the topless bars???

I remember Benson's Lounge somewhere off Mound.
and the Duchess on Van Dyke. I drove down Van Dyke a few weeks ago and it was still in business!!!

There's got to be a lot of old bars with roofs and ceilings missing in Detroit...

It wasn't a gay bar back in the late 80's to early 90's.

It is on Michigan near 52nd.

"Show Bars" originally presented music shows rather than topless stuff...although the meaning may have morphed over the years.

Already mentioned Starvin Marvin's on the Downriver Forum. Also Subi's. Remember Bogart's in Inkster and also Henry VIII's? Also spent some time on Michigan Ave at Goldiggers, as well as Islands and the 52nd Street Showbar. And, closer to home, the Atlantis Lounge in Lincoln Park.

A former neighbor of mine is part owner of the Duchess on Van Dyke. It is indeed still open, but I saw him a few months ago and he said business is going down.

If you saw a horrible pun there, that's your fault; I didn't put one in.

Don't forget the ZOO on 8 mile in front of the fairgrounds. No stage, just a row of shower heads and dirt floors. And that topless/porn movie house on the corner of Woodward and 8 mile.... Cisco's???

Man, I'm curious now. Who gets the showers, and who gets the puddles?

Starvin Marvin's- that's a long time ago. I used to play on a hockey team that was sponsored by the bar.Marvin's owner was a good guy.
One the West side there was La Chambre's on Telegraph and Mocambo's on 8 Mile. I went to a place on VanDyke a long time ago I think it was called Vandy's-the girls danced totally nude which was illegal. I learned about the place from a lawyer-his brother owned it.

A right of passage for 18 yr.old Oak Parkers back in the 70's was The Patio on 8 mile.Legal age to drink was 18.Luke warm beer in pitchers, loud music, poor lighting......and oh the hot? women.Where did they get some of these? Was there a union that protected these young? ladies? It was like watching someones much older sister trying to be sexy. The painful memories are coming back.

Many moons ago Evel Knievel was at Mocambo's with his posse. Don't think they called it a posse back then! He came in with girls in tow. Looked like they were used to sitting in his lap.

How bout the Tender Trap in Highland Park. The mayor(Blackwell's Dad) used to have a regular table there for business lunches(I don't mean box lunch either).

Pointe Athletic Club by Wooly Bully's was the place. Is it still open? Still a show bar?

Damn, I've gotta ask my dad about this one. He's a retired DPD Lieutenant who spent 4 years on the Vice squad in the mid-70's. As a kid, I remember him telling us after-work stories about all the topless bars they used to raid (albeit sanitized for out little ears at the time...).

Too funny!

Reminds me of a sign on the side of Henry the VIII's on Middlebelt in Inkster.

Henry Joy got around. There's a Joy Rd. in Detroit.

Lowell can describe Anderson's Gardens on Third Ave. near Wayne State. jjaba use to do sociological studies in there. Purely academic back then. Little tables where you sat with the girl of your choosing. The bar served you two drinks, and you paid right now for her drink.
There were hotels up the street just in case you were interested.

jjaba, Westside Bar Mitzvah Bukkor.

Sure, OG's Sax Club on McNichols near Hamilton. The name was a play on "Orgy's Sex Club", which they never could have called the place. I went in there once when I was seventeen and frankly I was scared out of my wits. But then I drank a bunch and became less scared.

This would have been, I don't know, 1978 or 1980 or thereabouts.

HAR, Jjaba. Ahhhhhh, Anderson's Gardens. I lived on Canfield right around the corner. We'd go in there to play shuffleboard. The girls hated we weren't in there for them...
