I know that the closing of a Subway mite not mean much normally, but it hurts to see another national chain leave the area. Does anyone know if there is another subway in Detroit anywhere?

I know that it was prolly a franchise location, too..Its a shame though.

If we had a subway in Detroit, we wouldn't be in the situation we find ourselves in now. :-)

Subway is the #2 fast-food chain in the US. Might even have more locations than McDonald's, which closed down several poor performers the past few years.

Closing is a bit alarmist. I've seen folks working on the building; giving it a new paint job and all. If it is no longer a Subway, at least it is something else.

I can tell you that when the original Subway near UDM, which was in an older building, burned down, they wasted no time in opening a new location.

Various fast food stands are one of the types of businesses that seem to embrace big-city life. What we need IMHO are more diverse retailers: clothing stores, furniture stores, and so on.

Actually for the "motor city" there aren't really many new car dealers in the D to speak of.

That's because there really aren't too many people buying new cars, probably.

Not enough sales at the Subway shop on W.Warren Rd. near Evergreen. Maybe a Arab-owned restaurant will boost some customers.

Some subways are franchised, so the decision to pull out would not necessarily be made by the company, rather the individual owner of the franchise.

AFAIK, all Subways are franchised. Check the Wiki on this. It should also link to the corporate Web site.

No, I used to work for thier wholesaler, US Foods. We supplied the company stores, our competitor Blue Line covered the franchises.

Yeah, franchises can be good and bad for the small biz owner. There are lots of stories about Companies allowing too much competition in too small an area. They will sell Bob a franchise, take his money every month, and then let Pete open up one right next door. I am not saying Subway does this mind you. Done right, a person can make lots of cash. I picked up a magazine once for entrepreneurs, there were lots of interesting franchise ideas, like a spicy Buffalo wing carry out place.

It's a business the point is to make money, sorry that concept is too difficult for you understand.

They do, and Tim Hortons have more restaurants in Canada than McD. Alot of restaurants in the Detroit area have below standard performance, so that's nothing new.

I think most restaurants in the area are franchised, and not owned by the coroporation. That may have a lot to do with the restaurants and how their business is.

There are way too many subways anyway. For some unknown reason we have 2 locations within a mile of each other here in little bitty Swartz Creek.

There seems to be a protocol in Warrendale for opening up a chain... Keeping the name until your franchise expires, then opening it up with a different name but near identical products. The Duncan Donuts comes to mind but there are others.

The exception being the ugly ass Beauty Supply they opened in the old Blockbuster which was called Costco until Costco made them change the name. That ugly hulk makes me shiver each time I pass it on the way to the folks.

I like Dell Tire myself Enduro (right across the street, with the same typeface as Belle Tire). I also like how the Hilltop Motel on Telegraph and Plymouth looks a lot like Hilton! :-)

Too bad about Subway. It used to be amusing getting a window seat and watching the hookers on Warren Ave. Who knows, maybe they'll buy the building and move their trade indoors.

Well, DP... The Hilton name has taken it's bumps lately!

I've also noticed some of the hookers have transitioned into pan handlers over the years. One time I saw one shaving her legs underneath my parents' neighbor's garage.

Woah, there. I understand perfectly. My knowledge of how a business works is not the issue tho.

My point in saying that was that its a sad thing when that happens and contributes to breaking up a community.

hmmm how can a name change only to save money for the business owner affect the breaking up of a community?

I for one would rather have less chains and more variety.

One less place to buy really expensive mediocre sandwiches in the city! Warrendale has many independent restaurants that have much better food at cheaper prices so this is no great loss.

"Boycott Subway for being an evil chain and closing one of their Detroit locations."

Trust me, more location will open in the city.
