Too bad you aren't in Charlotte. Man do they ever cook food differently down here. I thought that I had some good eats in Detroit, but there is a big difference between what you all eat up there and what is the norm down here. Long_in_the_tooth if you ever swing through Charlotte, stop in at Mert's on College Street in downtown... |

I am not into any fried anything anymore, but fried chicken at its best was served at the now defunct Sisters outlets. Not too many of them around town even in their hayday, but we liked them the best. I recall one was on the east side of Gratiot, just south of 8 mile. Anyone out there remember this chain? Where were the others located? |

Sisters were also located on Woodward and 8 Mile (Northside). The sign that;s on gratiot where a former Red Carpet Keim Real Estate is stripped, and you can see their old sign. I never had Chicken Shack though. I will have to try them. |

I don't usually eat fast food. It's not so much that I'm such a health-concious guy, it's more that I'm both cheap and finicky. Still, there's nothing else quite like one of those mutant chicken wings from Church's. Those damned things look like they're from a pterodactyl, not a chicken. |

Church's is WAY too greasy. IT's all about the fresh, white meat, salty, crispy chicken at Popeyes. |

The chicken at Popeye's is great; however, the side dishes are just as good. They have the tastiest mashed potatoes & gravy and biscuits you can find from a fast food place. The po'boy sandwiches are also great. For the carb conscious, they have naked and blackened chicken strips with no batter. They're very tasty. |

It's been twenty years, but I remember a co-worker taking me to a place on the near east side, can't remember the name of the place nor the exact location, but it was one of those general store-type locations. The thing I remember was how great the wings were. When you walked in, there was a guy in a large caged room (I'm not kidding), frying chicken wings. You'd tell him how many and what kind of sauce. He'd put the wings in a plastic bag, spill some sauce in the bag, shake it up, twist the top of the bag and hand it to you. Then you went to the counter and paid for it. Best damn wings ever. Also, there was a place in Lansing (early 90's) called "Goooood Chicken." Great name and great chicken. |

If you don't want to go the fast food route, I'd suggest Southern Fires ~ 575 Bellevue Detroit, MI 48207 313-393-4930. Out of this world fried chicken - with very old school flavor. Crisp, delicate and tasty on the outside and hot, tender and juicy on the inside. Get some extra drumsticks... Also, they don't always have it (when they do it's usually featured Monday or Tuesday) but Dave's Drive In at John R and Piquette also has a good fried chicken lunch and you can't beat the price. |

"Urbanize... fresh meat from a fast food restaurant?" Yes, some locally run fast food restaurants generally always have fresh meat. The closest out of a major chain though (I hate them) would be Wendy's. Unfortunately, Detroit (Michigan in fact) isn't lucky enough to have some of these. By the way, try this place called Chikc-fil-A in Rochester or Rochester Hills (only location in Michigan). They have delicious chicken and its likely the freshest out of all the chains. Once you try, you must go back. |

Wasn't there a 3 sisters Chicken on Livernois in the 80s? I remember seeing one on the westide somewhere, but I can't recall. Personally, I think that they were before their time. And if anyone here is, or is not a culinary student, you can pretty much make your own chicken just as good as the franchise(s) and save a ton of money. KFC Popeye's Church's Chicken Shack Some liquor stores (I probably hit below the belt with this one-but you'll be surprised that they're just as good also) Chester Fried (aneurysm, heart attack, and stroke simultaneously waiting to happen but it's sooo good!) 3 Sisters (R.I.P.-LOL) Alabama Style Those are some of my favourites. To quote Bratt..."My house. I cook the best." I may not be THE best, but I'm a bad dude when it comes to bird, baby! Holla @cha boy! BTW, does anybody remember MCL Cafeteria? I used to work at the one at Tel-12 mall in '93. Their bird was off the hook, too! I think a few Carribean restaurants had some [fried chicken] also. |

Can't remember the name, but the location sounds about right. I live in Florida now so I am not sure if it is still there. Still, quite fantastic chicken wings. WGPR... there's a thread if I ever saw one. Do I have stories... |

Rudy's broasted chicken in Allen Park. Just like chicken shack but the pieces are much larger and have better crisp to them. Also Wishbone chicken in Allen Park. Broasted/Fried come on it is very close. But if I had to go fried I would vote good ole mom's, she used to live in the south and everything comes out of an iron skillet with lots of grease/lard. Surprisingly I kept myself in shape over the years. |

Chicken shack is good, however the one near me at the Universal Mall closed under suspicious circumstances. I like the Hazel Park Farmer Jack's Fried Chicken Dinner, they give you like 8 pcs I think, a 4 pack hawaiian rolls, and a side choice of slaw, potato or macaroni salad for $7 bux. It's enough for a couple meals. |

I didn't know they had them here in Michigan. I live downtown but work in Troy...I'm going to have to find me this Chick-fil-a and stop there on my way home. Definitely worth trying!!! Chick-fil-A is good but don't go there expecting to order a drumstick, thigh and mashed potatoes. They serve boneless, marinated fried chicken breast sandwiches, strips and nuggets (fine by me). Good wraps and waffle cut fries too. I don't care for their char-grilled chicken. They're even open for breakfast. |

"A pressure cooler with oil makes some tasty chicken (or ribs or fish). That's essentially what the Colonel does." So two questions 1. I thought the Colonel was dead? You're saying he does it as if he's still alive. 2. If the Colonel was cooking the Chicken, wouldn't he still be using his own recipe instead of the crap they actually put in the questionable meat they feed us? I saw a documentary that gave some background about the Colonel. Apparently he was extremely dedicated to his business. It said the reason they offer mashed potatoes is because he believed the customers should feel like they received a lot for their money. The spuds made for a heavy bag. Pretty shrewd, that Colonel! Not long after his death they turned him into a goofy cartoon character. Corporations have no shame. (Message edited by Jimaz on March 17, 2007) |

Hey, I used to frequent a place called Chino Bandito's in Phoenix. Their most popular dish was "Jade Red chicken." It was crunchy chicken chunks (no bones) coated with a delicious red sweet/sour sauce with rice and beans and a snickerdoodle cookie. Best eaten with chopsticks. Surely there's some place around Detroit that has a similar dish. But where? |

The Colonel got sued by the Hueblein Company (which then owned KFC) when he complained that Hueblein's KFC mashed potatos tasted like "wallpaper paste." Back during the 1970s, Hueblein's KFC sold 1/6 of all the country's chicken (cockerels really) fryers. The business model was not working as well during the late 1970s and eventually R. J. Reynolds and Pepsi bought it, and today KFC (along with A&W, Long John Silver's, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell) is owned by Tricon Global (YUM! Brands after a name change). I think YUM! is a British company. As to its nutritional content, check it out! |
