On my picture taking adventure the other day I meandered my way to the 14 floor of the Maccabees building. As it was under renovation I had access to all rooms and views of town. This is where I found the vortex of midtown. look at the area and buildings around the Whitney building they seem to be producing some sort of circular phenomenon. Strange?

Interesting camera angle, I didn't see it at first. Not sure about a vortex, nevertheless nice shot. |

Hans57, are you referring to that darker circular area that fills most, well, maybe half of the lower right quadrant? That is strange. Did it look that way to the naked eye too? Woodward seems to want to avoid the vortex by orbiting around it. HA! (Message edited by Jimaz on February 03, 2007) |

Yeah, when I took the picture I didn't see it. It certainly does look like Woodward is avoiding it though. It's definitely portal. |

Hans57, was there anything else noteworthy about that location on the 14th floor? What would be really weird would be if some devious architect years ago actually planned all those buildings to produce this effect from that particular perspective. [Insert Twilight Zone music here.] This would make a great clue in a detective novel, something like Eco's Foucault's Pendulum. |

Were you taking the picture through a window? Older windows tend to be far from "smooth", and a lot of times trying to take a picture through them shows up all of the spots where the glass is thicker. |

You can tell that the circle is composed of the edges of buildings, it's a completely random occurrence. I just figured it would be an entertaining subject. |

It's weird how the shapes and shadows of the buildings to do that. It's a good circle though. Perfectly rounded by the architectural features of the buildings. |

LMich, there is a large dark orb due to the physical shapes and shadows of the buildings. What threw me off was Hans' comment about them being "around the Whitney" which they cleary aren't (no offense). I've exaggerated the shadow in one image, and outlined where the orb is defined by the building edges http://www.umich.edu/~ifmuth/d arkspot.jpg http://www.umich.edu/~ifmuth/o utline2.jpg (Message edited by wolverine on February 04, 2007) (Message edited by wolverine on February 04, 2007) |

I know a lot of people claim to see things in photos, but this is serious. If you look at this image of the vortex, I've circled in red the part worth examining more carefully. I believe that if we don't deal with this problem soon, it will suck all the life out of the city.
