Thanks for the posts folks. Unfortunately since the closing of Water Works Park the Hurlburt Memorial Gate is nothing more than a fence ornament that can only be viewed from its' back side. Just restoring it en situ does little for its future enjoyment by Detroiters. Long ago shorn of its' approach by the widening of Jefferson, it sits there as a work of art behind locked gates that cannot be fully appreciated by Detroiters. This is typical of Detroit art works. The Hurlburt Gate, the Thaddeus Kosiousko equestrian statue on Michigan near 3rd, and the Merrill Fountain in Palmer Park are Detroit works of art bereft of a nice setting where they can be fully appreciated (besides zooming past them in an automobile). |

"bereft of a nice setting where they can be fully appreciated (besides zooming past them in an automobile)." But automobiles are king! That's how everything SHOULD be viewed -- from cars! This is Detroit, just remember that! |

This is one reason why I'm hoping for a Jefferson narrowing one day. 7 lanes is ridiculous. |

Gistok are you potentially suggesting that it should perhaps be moved to somewhere else within the waterworks park or nearby? It is currently in a very awkward location. Even if the waterworks park could potentially be reopened (all terrorist threats aside) for pedestrian traffic, that isn't where I would envision the main pedestrian entrance. |
