These stories always sound fishy to me. Regarding the recent incident, why would a woman with a fur coat and diamond necklace be at a casino after midnight and not with a boyfriend, husband, or friend.

If I was advertising like that and won a lot of money at the casino, I'd have someone with me. Period. Just think about it. How many women dress like that, hang out at a casino til late, and go home alone?

She probably met a man, went home with him to seal the deal, and got robbed. She's just too embarrassed to tell the police what really happened.

I agree with Royce, at least his first two paragraphs. If you want to be a victim, dress and act like a victim.

Not to justify the crime or anything, but sheesh. If you paint "rob me" on your shirt, somebody's going to take up the suggestion.

That's silly. A single unescorted woman in a fur coat and expensive jewelry, out late at night, is a likely target in any city. That's not as it should be, but it is as it is.

At many big city Universities (which is what I'm familiar with), the campus security force provides a free escort service. Any student who feels uncomfortable walking to class or to his or her car can call and get an escort. It's unfortunate that we need to do such things, but that's the society we live in, and you ignore it at your peril.

If you are going to roll your eyes, have a better reason than that. If you think an unescorted woman should be able to walk around with expensive clothes and jewelry in a large American city, then you probably would also think there's nothing wrong with teenagers chatting online with adults they don't know.

It's a sad thing but we must exercise reasonable caution nowadays.

This reminds me of that stupid and sick argument that women that dress sexy are asking to be raped.

Anyway, I don't see how anyone can say that this is a pattern. When crime comes up in cities people are find anyway they can to try to connect dots and tie everything together, whether it goes together or not.

Sorry, this is neither stupid nor sick. The reality is sick but not my claim, which is this: if you are going to walk in an urban area in modern America, you need to be aware of your surroundings and take reasonable precautions.

Ask any police chief. Sad, admittedly, but true.

This does not excuse the robber one bit. (That's how the "dress sexy" claim was used in the past.) But facts are facts.

The robber was criminally wrong; but the victim was probably not acting in her own best interest.

Sorry if you don't like it.

People are always quick to jump on the victim as if they deserved it because of their actions that is of course until you yourself are one day a victim, then your perspective will drastically change.

If you got it, flaunt it. Especially if you want someone to steal it.

Karl,

You only get robbed BY the casino IF you let them!

Welcome, Professorscott.

Cheers, even in the midst of this horrible discussion.

Anyone NOT acting like crime can happen to them IS welcoming it. Period. Welcome to the city...hell, welcome to the earth. In my estimation, it has always been this way...any sense of security and safety has always been false.
