quote:One of Detroit's longest-standing businesses is closing Jan. 14. Washington Clothiers, which has been in the city for more than 85 years, is going out of business and taking with it lasting memories as one of Detroit's oldest apparel companies. Located in Cadillac Place on West Grand Boulevard across from the Fisher Building in Detroit's New Center area, the family-run store has been a trendsetter in urban fashion for generations, selling traditional dark suits alongside burnt-orange, leather trench coats with fur collars. It's an end of an era, according to Washington Clothiers manager Mary Hatcher.

This is a very cool store with a unique and pretty high quality selection. I hope the place makes it. The clothes definitely skew to a younger hip-hop kind of demographic though. FWIW, I think they would improve sales if they broadened their target customer. You know, if marketed to properly, the lawyers and accountants downtown will spend their money. |

Funny, I thought it closed when GM moved out! It should not be surprising. Govt workers wear fewer suits than GM workers, and even GM workers don't wear many suits these days. |

Studio Couture will probably close the same time Mark England de Mode does which is not soon as he is doing WELL... Keep your doomsaying over there Mindfield if you are that anxious to see Detroit fail, please do it in private... |

Yes, because making a realistic observation about Studio Couture means that I want the entire city to fail, very reasonable D_Stylin. I didn't say anything about Mark England as they had a lot more customers inside than Studio Couture did when I visited during the Christmas shopping season on a weekend. I don't want to see any retail fail in the city, but customers making purchases is a good sign of the health of a store and I've never seen anyone in Studio Couture. |

I wasnt saying that you did. What I was saying however is that Mark England didnt necessarily have a jumping clientele when it first opened either. It took months for his popularity to jump off. Studio Couture on the other hand JUST opened up relatively recently so give them time. In fact it has been less than six months since they have been open for business and thats giving them a month or two extra. |
