You're sorely mistaken if the price of gasoline is going to get much lower than that. Do you think Jed Clampett is going to suddenly discover a new major oil field? |

The 15 lowest prices at http://www.detroitgasprices.co m/ are all below $3.00 today. Oil companies may have overreached just a bit in the "game of chicken" they play with consumers. I think they like to raise them until it gets consumers' attention but not so high as to cause consumers to conserve. Once gas prices actually affect consumer driving habits, they're less likely to change back as easily. Oh well. I'll buy low. Jimaz, temporary pedestrian. |

Since early May, Michigan's (and Detroit's) prices have been unusually higher than the national average. The only reason I could find was a few regional refinery problems. Perhaps those problems have been fixed. It looks like it might drop a few more cents before it dips back below the national average again. Before all this began, I sensed a consistent 5-day period cycle in the price fluctuations. Is anyone here good with Fourier analysis? |

Jimaz - I've heard of an interesting explanation (excuse) for why MI gas prices are higher. I've heard that the oil pipes that bring in the gas from the Gulf and other locations don't actually reach Michigan or much of the midwest, so it then has to be trucked in.... However, I think that having a refinery right here in Detroit as we do would offset that... apparently not. Michigan does have higher taxes on gasoline that some other states too |

Spiritofdetroit, thanks. That's all useful info. I'm convinced that this higher-than-average price since early May was a temporary anomaly. I mentioned a 5-day-period cycle. If a Fourier analysis confirms that that's a dominant term, we might all benefit by filling up 2 or 3 days after a peak price. Conventional wisdom says to fill up on Wednesdays. This is kind of a game with me. |

There are two petroleum pipeline systems in the state of Michigan. There is no way Marathon could come close to matching market prices if all of their petroleum had to be trucked in to their refinery in Detroit. As for gas prices, I saw regular at $2.84 in Toledo today. |

I imagine that there are pipes running to the detroit refinery, but unlike many other states, the pipes are not spread throughout the state. Again, this was an explanation by an oil official, so who knows... |

$2.97 @ Costco in Roseville. How long will this last, there ain't no tellin'! @ least until Bush is out of office next year. Gas is actually cheaper on the westside in contrast to the eastside. It's been like that for the past year I've been working crosstown. |

I've noticed that Warren/Roseville gas prices is usually much cheaper than Oakland County. If it's truly a "refinery" issue, then that doesn't make sense. We all get our gas from the same refinery. |
