In Shelby twp., there used to be a place on 23 mi. and mound road called Vendetti's Pizza House. It had great pizza but had a specialty sandwich called a Spanky, that was out of this world. There is nothing out there that compares to a Spanky. They have been closed for 3 years but are opening anew on Van Dyke btn 24 and 25 mi. or 25 or 26 mile. It's called the Spanky House. It's worth even a long drive to have a Spanky. Supposed to be opened end of June or early July. Yummmm, I can't wait. |

Shields original location: E. Davison at Shields Street. Hence the name -- it was the Shields Bar. Newer owners added the possessive apostrophe ("Shield's"), making it look like the business belongs to someone named Shield. WTF???? |

I agree with Fury13, Buddy's is best but you have to go to the Detroit store on Conant. It's just off the east end of the Davison Freeway, take that to the first light, turn left and go maybe 1/4 mile. I have given final exams there. They have a private room overlooking the bocce courts. Do the old Italian men still play bocce on Friday nights during the summer? Just wondering. By the way Shields original location no longer makes the best anything; it's been closed for a long time. |

"this thread is pretty much Exhibit "A" in establishing that Detroit pizza is, by and large, mediocre" No way. In Metro Detroit there's many great pizzerias. All types: thick ,thin, square you name it in the Detroit area you'll find it. By the way I think Chicago style pizza is the most overrated -I've never a had one that I though was as great as it's touted to be. |

Applesauce... Nona's is great pizza! Jet's is very similar to Nona's. But Buddy's is the best. Closest Buddy's to you is the one in Pointe Plaza at Moross & Mack (probably less than a mile from you). It's mainly carryout, but also has some sitdown available. I usually order when I get there, and then browse the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in the same plaza, until the pizza's ready. |

It's just off the east end of the Davison Freeway, take that to the first light, turn left and go maybe 1/4 mile." I've been to that one several times in my ventures into the city, it has a bar as well. I would always call ahead and they would have it ready for me, Police heaven for some reason. The closest Buddy's to me, when I lived in Detroit, was the one in Dearborn on Michigan Ave. VIP carry-out parking. You know, I would put Detroit Pizza in a taste test against any pizza, except coal fired oven pizza. |

Uncle Paul's, hands down. I'd heard such good things about Buddy's and Pizza Papalis for so long but found them average, at best. But then again, I can't see how Little Caesars stays in business and people seem to love them still. Is there ANY pizza place anywhere in the area that will do a topping of garlic? No one has it on the menu and I've had several places tell me they wouldn't do it. I don't get it, especially if they have garlic in OTHER pizzas. |

Loui's (note the strange spelling) in Hazel Park is pretty good. The pizza is a lot like Buddy's. Buddy's is good. Cottage Inn is pretty good. The location near me sends coupons for free pizzas every few months. The original place in Ann Arbor is nice to visit. I used to like Peppina's Ristorante (even with the hokey amethyst theme and the $1 surcharge for the VIP room) in Lincoln Park made good pizza. But it has been closed for a while now. |

Louie made the pizza at Buddy's from the early 1950's until the late 1960's. Then, he left Buddy's for Shields on Davison. I'm not sure if Louie was actually a partner in Shields. He bought his place in Hazel Park around 1976 or 1977. Louie lived across the street from Jayne Playground during his Buddy's days and maybe even during his Shields tenure. |

Sportsman's Pizza on Fort Street in Wyandotte has a number of very good specialty pizzas. My favorite is their steak pizza with an olive-oil based sauce. It's out of this world! My ex-husband worked for Clemente's pizza in Lincoln Park for a short while a few years back. Their dough and sauce is made from scratch every day, overseen by a very particular old woman (owner's mother?) which is probably why they taste so good! |

Pizza Papalis if you're downtown. Hockeytown has surprisingly good pepperoni pizza. I was expecting a Little Cesar’s rip-off, but they definitely have their own taste. Gilbert’s Lodge in the south end of St Clair Shores has a great pie as well. |

Try Teroma's in Center Line. It's a nice neighborhood establishment, the pizza is square and delicious. I like it much better than Buddy's. Green Lantern isn't too bad either, but the pepperoni is a bit greasy for my taste. Also, I like Juliano's, just north of 696 on Van Dyke. They make a good pie, but it's pricy. |
