Have a peek inside an MGM casino hotel room June 5, 2007 BY HEATHER NEWMAN FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Today is the first day you can reserve a room at the MGM Grand's permanent Detroit hotel, which opens in October. The rooms will feature luxurious touches -- and a luxury price tag that starts at $299 a night and tops out around $2,500 http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20070605/ENT 11/706050386/1035 ------------------------------ ------------------- Didn't expect a room to cost that much. That ruins my plans to stay at a casino for a night. MGM's web site for room rates.... https://reservations.mgmmirage .com/bookingengine.aspx?pid=01 6&ad=11/1/2007&nights=undefine d |

There must be a mistake with the published pricing. Maybe these are the suites? One can get a room at the Ritz Carlton (Dearborn) for considerably less. Even the Townsend (Birmingham), the most exclusive hotel in Michigan, has similar or slightly lower pricing. Why someone would spend more at a cheesy gambling den is beyond me. Even for gamblers, it makes no sense. The MGM Grand Las Vegas is significantly cheaper. For gamblers in Detroit, the Marriott Ren Cen is half the price or even less. Heck, one can get a decent hotel room in Manhattan for less. |

I'm looking at the casino site...No mistake. But you also have to remember that these rooms are larger than the average. |

And remember that the hotel is connected to, but not part of, the casino. And they are going for a very upscale hotel experience. |

It might have something to do with comping high rollers. |

Just so we can keep our facts straight and our statements/hyperbole in check... (1) A room at the Ren Cen, if you wanted to stay there tomorrow would start at $279.00 Hardly 1/2 price... (2) A room for the same night at the Ritz would be $279.00 and a club level room would be $359 (and who would ever NOT stay on the club level) (3) A room at the Townsend would be $332 and a suite starts at $405. It is a high end, destination hotel. I would be worried if it was much less. There will be packages and comps and all that stuff -- but for to reserve in advance at full price, $299 seems about right. |

I suppose Dabirch when you break it down it does make since. However, I still didn't expect it to be that much. It's not a cheap looking hotel from the pictures. I'm sure they know what they are doing. I was told that some rooms for New Years and the NAIAS are beginning to fill fast. |

Nobody pays the rack rate for a hotel room! I should think that you will be able to score a room in the $120.00 to $150.00 range during non-peak periods. |

The reasons why Las Vegas rates are cheaper is because there is alot more competition involve, there are only two other casino hotels to worry about here. |

Oh if you think that those suites won't fill up you better think again. $2500 is steep, and suites will sit empty for weeks before they are booked. If you've ever stayed in a great hotel with great suites you know its more than just checking in. Detroit's market will fill the bill. I don't doubt it. <313> |

I don't think you can get anything lower than $299, as that is the cheapest price on their website. Although it's high end, the rates still seem too high, especially given the current economy. Just my two cents. I know I was looking forward to staying there one night while visiting home from here in DC, but that's too steep for me. Let's hope, though, that the high-rollers flood in. |

um...I don't know what you people are talking about with the Ren-Cen. I was just researching rooms at the Marriott for the 2nd weekend in September and I could get a room at the Marriott on a Saturday night for $139 a night plus tax. |

Most people do not book hotels 3 months in advance -- unless they are vacationing. Not many people vacation in Detroit. The majority of guests will be business travelers who, except for conventions (which are more like vacation travel), will book a week in advance or so. The prices for them will be similar to the prices at the Ren Cen, and I am assuming similar to the Book Caddy. |

My ex-gf paid less at the Townsend in Birmingham (in March '07, about two weeks advance). I have paid less for nice accomodations in Manhattan and prime London. I can't imagine this will be the true "market" rate, unless 90% of their business will be comped and the "market" price is largely irrelevent. |

ps: wonder how fast the new casinos will get trashed or if they'll stay up on maintenance last time I was at MGM the elevators were beyond anything I've seen at anyplace considered a 'destination' - panels smashed in, walls severely scarred - the losers definitely left their marks behind |
