I've noticed a number of large brown clouds hanging over the city and its southern suburbs this morning. Does anyone know why there is such awful pollution today?

Frank Zappa. Old school reference.

The air downriver always seems nastier than in other parts of the metro. Definitely a major negative compared to other suburbs.

thank the sewage treatment plant and Zug Island

One day the treatment plant was putting out such a nasty colored cloud I was ticked enough to exit the freeway and look for the source.

There was a report on the local news last night about an arsonist on the near west side setting fires at 6 abandoned houses yesterday. (can't find an online reference) So that's one possibility. I did see some general smoke in the air this morning around the I-96/Warren Ave area.

The southern suburbs always seem to bear the brunt of pollution of the city especially the water. Most of the treatment plants and factories are north of those suburbs.

"Probably the humidity."

Just the sun reflecting off of the clouds. Some light fog developed over parts of the area before the sun rose in the form of low (but not too dense) Nimbostratus clouds.

I got the reference while reading this forum at work in the ugly part of town where they keep the government buildings (it's so hard to find a place to park around there).

In the late 90's I managed a plant in Taylor so I had to drive across town on I-94 usually right as the sun was coming up. I noticed occasionally that there was terrible low hanging smoke coming from the Rouge Plant. I figured that they did their dirtiest work overnight when no one could see the smoke and sometimes they didn't stop in time for the smoke to be clear by morning.
