another great set of pics. i love seeing pictures of the rehabs that show how far the city's come, but yours always put it in perspective, showing how far it has yet to go - but in a way that always has me amazed at the buildings in the city.

Bulletmagnet, I really enjoyed that. Would you consider meting them out in smaller batches though? It might prolong the tease and better generate comments on individual photos. Thanks! :-)

The green house, 3700 St. Aubin, was where my father lived as a boy for a few years in the early to mid-'30s.

http://i148.photobucket.com/al bums/s22/bulletmagnet69/100_30 91.jpg?t=1177118063

It was kitty-corner from the Evangelista house at Mack and St. Aubin (vacant lot now), site of the famous unsolved 1929 mass murder.

Fury13, I really like that house! It has always caught my eye, as the green stands out in the otherwise drab background. It still looks to be in damn good shape, owing to it being occupied for so long. Do you have any photos from back then that you can share or any stories about the neighborhood? http://farm1.static.flickr.com /188/408245052_b712590e58_b.jp g

Thanks for posting the pictures, Bullet. In the picture below, the one building says "Bridge Cards Accepted" and has little writing above it. In the full size version of the photo, maybe you can see the writing. Also, can anyone explain what that means. What is a "bridge card?" The only meaning that comes to mind for me would have to do with playing cards, which does not make much sense to me.

Bridge cards are what has replaced food stamps. They are issued by Michigan Department of Human Services.

Deandub11 that photo was on the south side of Kercheval east of Mt Elliot. I really like the leaded (?) glass above the 'open' sign, something that was once common in Detroit. If you look at the (third) photo of the hardware store in the DQP 5.1 thread, you will see some absolutely beautiful glass in the frieze.

Bulletmagnet, I have this pipe dream of buying 3700 St. Aubin, my father's ancestral home if you will, and all the property around it to create some sort of inner-city estate.

Won't happen, but it's a nice thought.

Thanks for the information, Ramcharger. Since I'm not living in Michigan, I was unaware of the bridge card program.

Fury13, that’s not a bad idea. I have often thought about what it would take to bring farming back to that area. There are plenty of wide open prairies there now, with plenty of urban game such as pheasant, morning dove, and dog.

bridge cards are also what you get for the Family Independence Program (FIP) which has replaced the old ADC (Aid for Dependent Children) program. I get to help people get these for a living. I work as an Eligibility Specialist for DHS.

I've long thought that what killed the city's aesthetic in the outer areas was the process of filling in Windows of retail and small shop buildings. That is evident in a lot of your shots. Perhaps this was in response to the riots as a prevention for B&Es? Or maybe to curtail heating costs? I'm sure there are modern window alternatives nowadays that would offer these business owners' security and efficiency and make these buildings look like they were intended to by the original architects. Painting over lovely brick work with loud colors is an equally gross practice too. I know Hazel Park passed an ordinance against that.

"There are plenty of wide open prairies there now, with plenty of urban game such as pheasant, morning dove, and dog."

Dog?

I guess you're joking. Actually, my idea would be to have a big kennel there with maybe 40 dogs. But it would have to be zoned industrial (M-1), or B-2 or B-6 for that purpose.

Bulletmagnet, I love your pix. They delve into the beauty this city once had and I wish i could've seen this city when it was in its prime. I've been using my camera phone to take pix of some historic/contemporary areas of this city. I recently opened up an account with flickr.com and I have over 300 pix of downtown that I've yet to post and I have taken both day and night pix within the past few months. I plan 2 have these pix up and running soon. Keep taking those pix. I plan 2 get myself a nice digital camera as well.

Jerome81, I would be willing to try that slide show idea. I just need some time to work on it. I'm thinking of doing a 'best of' DQP and that might be the ticket. Thanks.
