i was wondering for a while if my browser was going nuts or what. looks good, a lot cheerier-looking than the old design, which really it should be.

it could use a 'start new thread' link at the top of the detroit page, for some reason it's MIA. scrolling things to the right still have the old colors too. but don't mind me, i'm picky. :-)

In this new section, the new Copa category, the sports threads will be "parked"...

It's a tad bright but I know I can adjust. It's head & shoulders above what the Freep did. I KNOW these are threads and forum for people to discuss Detroit. The Freep is a website that's trying to pretend to be a newspaper which doesn't work as well for me; outside of the teeny tiny reference at the top, you'd never know it had anything to do with the paper at all.

It was too dark before--like it came from 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

If it's too bright for some, then throw in maybe 5% gray, but it's OK for me.

I prefer darker colors and classic fonts/stylings they tend to add an air of seriousness to a site, this reminds me of some bad convention/tourism sites cheerfully touting the merits of their city/region. But I also love the green screens of old for software programs.

I liked it better the other way, but I can see how this look could be easier on the eyes, particularly for some folks. It's not as though you made a radical change and f'ed it up, or anything like that.

I definitely like the blue background and the associated font change. But I'm not so sure about the actual thread real estate...it's so sterile looking! And I already miss the Soulful Detroit link at the top. I used it frequently to hop back and forth. Still...change is good, as we are often told. I'll get used to it!!

Congrats, Lowell, on 10 years of DetroitYES!

Lowell, I know you may not want to reveal this information, and that is understandable, but what is the monthly cost of a website such as this? with the extensive content, photos, and large volume of guests, I imagine its costly. Anyway, Ive always been curious about what these types of websites cost....

Hi Lowell,

Congrats on 10 years!

While it seems most people agree that the new color scheme is better, I actually thought the darker scheme was easier on the eyes and enjoyed it. Perhaps there is a way to slightly darken the background but leave it basically the same? I do like the slight change in color between every other post, though. That's a nice touch.

Congrats!

Lowell,

Practical problem: On the hall of fame threads, the text after "CLICK HERE" at the top of the thread is still in white, and is not visible. You will have to make that text a darker color to make it visible.

One problem I see with this is with the old B&W photos and maps in the HOF and archived threads having no borders. I know that I corrected the pics to show up better on a dark background, and looking at some of them again in the new format, frankly, they look like crap.

The white/baby blue works for color/colour pics, but otherwise...

Throw in a splash of pink and it would look like a 'new mommies' forum.
I spend all evening at work looking at bright monitors, so the dark, rich appearance of DetroitYes was a welcome respite. Can't say that I'm a big fan of this new look. Waaaaay too bright.

Congratulations on 10 years. I've been a follower of this site for some time and I always enjoy the scoop I am able to get from the forum especially when it comes to the Book Cadillac or the Michigan Central. Good attitudes or not all the posts give color to each situation. I dig the new colors. It's kind of like an awakening for the site. The old colors were cool and I liked them for different reasons but the bright yellow and orange fireball in the middle of the cityscape always kind of bugged me. Honestly, you could change the colors to purple and pink and I'd still read it everyday. (don't though ok?)

Good luck in the next 10 years Lowell!

Our baby continues growing!

DetroitYES! is in middle school, wearing a new look and picking up a well-earned allowance from a sponsor.

Thanks for the first decade of strengthening our community this way, LB.

Love it! Much more optimistic coloring goes with the theme of the web site and much more upbeat feelings about Detroit.

Much better with the gray, I really didn't want to start adding borders to Sanborn maps and old pics.

Thanks.

What's the verdict white or off-white [light gray]?

With the white my ThinkPad can light up the place and I can turn off any other lights.

Too bad there's no option like the PHP's ability for users to elect their own themes.

Has that graying been progressively darkening (in stages)? Or am I looking at the laptop too much at an angle?

Lowell, exactly what color parameters have you settled on for the alternating two main colors? Just curious, and what were they initially? In case I ever get around to altering the board's themes at the open-source documentation forum I'm administering for an OpenOffice project.

Livernoisyard, the old colors were \rgb{1D273A,} and \rgb{0D1522,}.

These are now \rgb{FFFFFF,} and \rgb{E3E3E3,}.

(MSPaint gave me those numbers.)

Isn't {FFFFFF} the argument for pure white--the blow torch used earlier? Are those numbers for the correct set?

Did you settle on the final numbers through some trial-and-error or through some suggested parameters or ...?

Okay the tweaking is finished and settled on lighter shades. [#F7F7F7 -- 4% gray and #F5FBFF -- 4% blue for the geeks of you.]

Any slower load times for big threads, such as the OCF and other image larded threads, is most likely due to the fact that the board has been regenerated to write the new colors on all threads. This means all files now have new modification dates that may cause your browsers to have to reload them rather than pulling old ones from your browser cache.

I regenerated the board three times in the process of getting to this point.

Ok,now it looks more integrated into the over-all website design, much better. Before the board was sticking out like a sore thumb. But Psip is right, it does take longer to load.

And congratulations to 10 years of excellence about Detroit.

How come the rightmost 20% of the DY banner has that vague, undefined repetition of the riverfront? It's obvious that the banner was simply "extended." The appearance of the river is quite different from what was shown to the west of it and yet it doesn't change either for the 20%. Wasn't the graphic wide enough?

Regarding the continuation of the header, I design webpages to fit on a minimum of 800 pixel wide monitor resolution setting, but to also stretch to fit any resolution. 800 is a standard sized monitor setting choice on most computers, so pages designed at that setting don't require horizontal scrolling to read. Also pages designed at 800 pixels don't require head turning to read.

The Detroit panorama above is 800 pixels wide by 116 high. Beneath it, a 1 wide x 116 high table cell background .gif spreads infinitely to prevent an abrupt end and allow the 'stretchability'.

What a wonderful labor of love! I personally thank you, Lowell, for your time and effort. To tell the truth, I don`t care which colors you use or in which shades. You don`t eat the box, you eat the cake! It`s what`s inside that matters. If I had learned this much about our city growing up, I don`t know if I would have left it so long ago. I just didn`t know enough to appreciate it. Alas, another product of the DPS school system. I have learned more in the few months as a lurker/forumer as I did in my twenty-one years as a resident.Cass Tech grad in `81 and gone for good two years later.

Apparently few notice or think about what they read and how they react.

Most babies are zero years-old when born, but Lowell's baby was somehow a 1 year-old when born. Or that's how some minds work. That caper seems to be working for conning some doofuses, though.

Entering a tenth year is the same as a ninth anniversary to rational, sentient beings.

Maybe it's time for a forum upgrade? A good forum isn't mega expensive (1 or 2 hundred dollars for something really nice), and some kind of a forum fundraiser would probably cover it. I personally don't have any spare change, but I'm sure there's other people who have a few dollars to donate.

I like that there are new colors and that it's brighter, but maybe it's too bright. Maybe a darker blue would look better?

Please note that this thread will later today be moved to Detroit Connections where it belongs as it is not about Detroit, but about the forum. The reason I started it over here was that the questions were sure to rise.

Regarding some points above.

First of all, thanks to all for the many kind compliments and suggestions.

Jasoncw, thanks but no thanks for donations for a forum upgrade. Cost of software is not an issue, but the hundreds of hours required to install it, learn it, tweak it, deal with all the support questions, transfer accounts which would require everyone to reset their passwords and on and on take the cost into the several thousand range.

The current software Discusware is capable of doing most of what other forums offer including profile options like those cute little avatar pictures. I have deliberately disabled everything but the bare essentials needed for discussion. Enabling them merely puts a bigger hit on the server and leads to more questions and support issues. We already deal with more of those than we we care to do. Discusware is also highly stable and secure.

Gravitymachine, regarding the Couples Resorts ad, it is something I am doing as both a learning experiment and as a courtesy to Couples Resorts. I am not being paid for it. They are a Jamaican owned company with a terrific product and are the nicest people I have ever worked with.

I love doing this project, but in business terms this site is a big money loser for me. Couples Resorts, whose internet services my AtDetroit company manages, is one of my paying customers which allows me to make a living while I pursue my for love and art projects like Detroityes and SoulfulDetroit.

Some of the lessons I have learned on my not-for-profit for-art projects have been carried over to my for-profit side. For instance a few years ago, based on what I had learned here, I implemented a highly successful message board on the Couples site - an innovation in the hospitality industry now being copied by others.

Beside allowing guests to get all the details prior to visiting, it has become a meeting place for future and repeat guests who have gone on to independently form their own clubs and planned gatherings - ala the Forum Social Club. Now instead of guests nervously going to an unknown 'foreign' country with a bunch of other unknown guests, they are arriving into a family of others they have virtually met, knowing what to bring and what to leave home, etc. Take a look at the "Meet Up at Couples" mega thread if you wanter over to that message board.

Finally I want to say a big thanks to all of you, and you know who you are, who have donated to the support of this site over the years. Your donations have covered most of the 'real dollar' costs of this site and have been a huge encouragement to its maintenance and growth.

Again, some socialists at DY want something for nothing and even attack a lesser socialist (for his giving in?) who provides free forums because some meager advertising revenue is generated.

I like it. The light colors and pictures give it a more uplifting feeling. The redesign also makes it easier to use. A good change. Keep up the good work Lowell.

wow livernois! your deductive skills are amazing!!!!!!!
from my simple benign question, you were able to deduce that I was a militant socialist hell bent on belittling others who don't share my views.
have you ever considered a career with the CIA clandestine services?

mostly i was questioning the stylist aspects of it, scenes of detroit interrupted by scenes of jamaca, seems disjointed and unintentional, I thought perhaps the banner was hacked or something at first.

and lowell, thats cool (not that you needed my approval), I'm not judging you on it, but by your extened, somewhat defensive response, its clear you thought long and hard to justify it to yourself

Has anyone noticed that the Discuss Detroit forum has been kind of slow (that is, a small number of posters)? Is this normal for early in the week?

Black words against white background = easier reading. Nice panorama from your canoe.
