Former North Detroit General Hospital aka Greater Detroit Hospital is being stripped. In addition to dumping, drug activity, prostitution, and scrapping, medical records were never removed and racks of files are clearly visible from the street.

A meeting has been scheduled for Monday, November 6, at 7 p.m. at the Hamtramck High School Community Center, 11350 Charest. Residents in the surrounding neighborhoods hope to bring officials from the City of Detroit and Wayne County to hear about what it's like to live near the hospital in hopes that they will take the initiative to sell it.

Does anyone have the slightest idea what a building like that would sell for?

Unfortunately, the buildings have very little value today. All of the windows, pipes, and ducts were stolen over the past month.

The company that owns it went into bankruptcy in 2002. Both the City of Detroit and Wayne County have liens against the property for back taxes. In 2003, it was sold for $1.7 million, but the buyer couldn't secure financing and the deal fell through. Another offer of $1.4 million was accepted in 2005, and closing was scheduled for March of 2006, but the sale was not completed. I heard that when it came time to sign the papers, the City and County couldn't decide how to split the money.

After the east building was gutted by scrappers in mid October, the same buyer made another offer of $400,000. The condition of the hospital is much worse now. The buildings will probably have to be demolished.
