How did I remove it? We scraped as much off as possible, then I rented a big pad sander from Home Depot, and went to town on it. It ate through pads, gumming them up like crazy. It cost me about $100 in pads, but the crap is all off the floor. Good luck. |

Phew - nasty. Ive been using soy bean oil, so far so good - but whatamess. The black mastic from my houses build era is actually water based so its immune to traditional solvents. http://franmar.com/ This stuff is working really good, but not quite as easily (in my case) as it says on the website. So far its the only thing that dissolves this evil crap. Off topic ? Actually this is some of the stuff I wanted ask eap about. But I guess the "Ask eap Show" isnt on the radio anymore. lol |

As for being water based, we found that too... A wire brush, and lots of water can also be used with a small amount of sucess. We actually switch to water over comercially avialable solvents, seeing as the sucess rate wasn't that much different. Give good old water a shot Mauser. |

Here's a few shots for those reading who don't know what we're talking about. After we ripped up the carpet, we found Linoleum tiles on the floor (white). The asbestos laden mastic was used to secure the tiles to the hardwood floor. Solvents, scrapers and a nylon brush were used to get off as much as we could. As I said we gave up on solvents and switched to water with almost identical results. We got it to the stage in the photo above, and went with the sander to get the remains. As soon as the floor was done, we switched to the ceiling... Old-house-atcha! |

Those look like my floors prior to my sanding the hell out of them. Didn't know it was asbestos, though. It was gummy, made a horrid mess of the sanding pad. Looked like some type of varnish, though (I have a 1920 house). I learned something new today! Now I am going to die from inhaling all that asbestos laden crap! |

Heres what I am starting with. Entire basement, the house is about 52X52 feet square so thats the area Im dealing with. I have a leak issue I am struggling with (a whole utha story) and the water caused the mastic to let go of the tiles. But not water or even scalding hot water quite loosened this crap..So I shucked all the tiles and Im attempting to get down to the concrete. Heres the soy bean oil - it seems to be working well, seeing how nothing else has. Mmmmmmmmm....Poisonous ! This is about 1/8th the area that needs to be cleaned, Im trying to go in sections so I dont get overwhelmed (more than I am) |

Mine didn't look like it had tile on it at all, at any point...maybe it wasn't asbestos stuff and it was really just some funky old varnish. I wish you luck. Took me 2 years to finally get everything the way I want it and I still haven't done the kitchen or 2 bedrooms. I did gut the bathroom (which used to be a jelly closet), and stripped 70 years of paint off of all the wood. It was a nightmare, but it looks great now. |

52 x 52 would blow... We did maybe 15 x 10, it and it took several months. Best of luck, I hope your concrete is at least semi-level. |

Eap just called and asked me to point out a few things: Mauser and Andrew, your problems are not the same and will be resolved differently. Andrew's mastic is water-based, Mauser's is a solvent. Andrew's would have been fixed by pouring hot water & soap and letting it soak, then mop it up. It takes about three applications. Mauser, there's only one product that will work for your problem. It's called, (I swear) "Old Hard Adhesive Remover." It comes in a bright orange can and you can find it in the hardware section at Meijer. It's stinky and caustic (and be sure to shut off any pilot light down there) but works quickly. (Message edited by itsjeff on September 03, 2006) |
