Tour the Motor City on 2 Wheels! Pre-Registration for Tour de Troit 2006 is now available at www.corktowndetroit.org. The ride, which will be approximately 35 miles, is set for Saturday, September 23 at 10:00 a.m. - on-site registration begins at 9:00 a.m. The ride will start and finish at Roosevelt Park in front of the Michigan Central Station. Registration costs $25 ($15 for students) and includes a map with information about the sights you will be biking past, light breakfast, water and a snack provided at a break stop (location TBD), and food, drink and music at a post-ride afterglow. The ride is fully SAG-supported. Visit www.corktowndetroit.org for more info. Greater Corktown Development Corporation sponsors the Tour de Troit to raise awareness of biking as a mode of transportation, to publicize the growing greenways network in the City of Detroit and all of Southeastern Michigan, and to raise funds for the development and maintenance of the Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink. The Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink is a series of bike lanes and pedestrian paths intended to connect Corktown and Mexicantown to each other and to the Detroit River, specifically the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy's vision for the West Riverfront. For more information, visit http://www.corktowndetroit.org /2005/green_ctown.html . |

This was soooooo much fun last year. The girlfriend and I had a blast. We will be bringing friends with this year. Will Slows be catering again this year? |

Cool! How are the roads? Would you suggest road bike, hybrid or mountain bike? |

people do it on all bikes there was a bmx bike last year, recumbant bikes, mountains, cruisers, road racing bikes... you name it. the roads are detroit roads, so chances are good there'll be some rough stuff somewhere but the route planners will take that into consideration. Last year there were just a few spots that people really needed to slow down for. I'll be doing like last year and riding my mountain bike with smooth city tires, but all will make it no problem (assuming they are in decent ridable shape to begin with of course) (Message edited by gravitymachine on August 23, 2006) |

Would the veterans recommend this for the novice/average bike rider? I have no doubt I would absolutely love it, yet the mrs questions wether or not she could handle it. |

Yes, Slow's will be catering the post-ride shindig again. The ride is paced at 10-12 mph, so it is comfortable for novice riders, if not slow for intermediate/advanced riders. It's definitely a pace that allows for conversation and observation. |

Novice riders handle it pretty well. However, you will definitely be hungry for Slows when you're done. |

Bring it. I think they won't let you ride without one...any sanctioned riding event will require proper safety equipment. At the very least, the judgemental glare from politically correct eyes will be blinding if you dare go bare-headed when they're trying to teach their children better habits. If I cannot make it, I'll lend you mine. |

you can get a bicycle helmet at places like target and meijer for under $25. skateboarding/bmx helmets work, a hockey helmet is probably cool too, and there are plenty of bicycle shops in the area that'll be more than happy to help you out last day to pre-register and get a t-shirt! |

Not sure, but I don't think there is. Chance of (any) rain tomorrow is currently listed as 60%, which often ends up being a smattering of rain, so it may not be too bad... |

I saw the woman laying down on her face surrounded by people... they said she fell off her bike, looked kinda odd. The tour was a lot of fun, really showed off some neighborhood gems. I took my mountain bike which doesnt have a computer on it, but it seemed like the front of the pack was going more than 12mph. During the 2nd leg they probably could have used some of the group-ups they did during the first leg, but the cops did an amazing job with their sliding windows traffic control. People at the end were getting the last cop yelling at them to "tighten it up... c'mon catch up" which is different from most tours. The food at the end was really good... they had chili which I guess was from Slows? I didnt get to taste it because they ran out but I did have some really good wraps and some beer. The tour was very well organized and hats off and a thanks to Kbkav! |

Oh, I forgot to mention.... in many of the neighborhoods a lot of the people were yelling encouragements, waving hi and really enjoying watching the bikes... that made the ride even more fun. |

Oh, I forgot to mention...around 10:30am, when the ride was passing a building I was working on downtown, one of the riders yelled out to one of the people working with me, "drop the cigarette and get on a bike." I was like, "get off the bike and pick up a hammer!" But for the most part it was enjoyable watching many of the riders going by with gaping jaws. |

The woman flying over her handle bars was my wife, Brk2mch A guy in front of us with a baby trailer stopped in the road, my wife freaked and must have grabbed only the front brake! Away she went! That was the end of our Tour De Troit for 2006. |

So far-so good. We spent Saturday afternoon in the ER. They said no broken bones - luckily just sprains, but said to see a specialist for her wrist. Pretty bruised though. Both eyes, nose, left wrist and right knee. Lots of pain killers. Her helmet sure helped! DPD was great, Rescue guys were great, Tour leader was great, and the Tour help van from Honest John's was great! We can't wait for next year. |

the food wasn't from slows, dunno where it came from but I hear it was good (i mainly stuck to the beer :D) I didn't see thnk2mch's wife go down, hope she gets better soon, but I did see the one motorcycle cop dump his bike on lonyo lol (he was ok, he got right back up) a good time for sure, there were roughly 350 people out there! |

A far cry from the 50 or so the first year!!! Thanks so much for taking the ball on this and running this the way you have! I swear I will be there next year Thanks again for seeing this through!!!
