I'm thinking of taking a hot date to Baker's this weekend. Anyone familiar with these artists and how they differ? All good? One not to miss? Thanks.

Dwight is a great trumpeter, plays Bebop and beyond.
Dezie is a very soulful tenor man and veteran of T.J. Fowler's 1950s band. His orch has some decent charts and players.
Spencer plays more 'avante garde' jazz.

If you want to get this date in the mood, I suggest
Dwight,
Dezie
Spencer and several stiff drinks...

Thank you, Jimg! Exactly the kind of insight I was hoping for. :-)

Barefield is not likely to induce a warm, romantic mood. Unless your date is seriously, really into jazz (not the pasteurized horseshit they play on the radio,) Barefield will probably leave him cold.

Ravine--that's where our old friend alcohol has to take over and do it's job.

56packman and Ravine,

You've obviously never met Amy_p.

Dead men are not calm near her...cannot believe she needs ANY help warming up her man.

Cheers!

No female can live up to a Gannon endorsement IRL, but it's nice to live the illusion... ;)

I took some friends who are visiting from Paris to Bakers to see Spencer. They adored it. Go Bakers!

I get the feeling I might be setting myself up at this point, but actually I had the meatloaf, and my date had the catfish.

Too easy. I'll go with the tamer response.

You should NEVER let your meat loaf, Amy_p, and you know that. Not sure if it's OK to let your cat fish, either.

I have never been to the lounge. I used to go by that place every day as a child and wondered how it was to go in. Now that i'm finally a grown-up I'm going to try it when I get back in Detroit. 313
