I'm a little unfamiliar with the restaurants in/near Eastern Market, and would like to stop in with some friends before a ballgame Saturday for lunch. Please give me some recommendations for where the best lunch is at, and where the service is the fastest despite the inevitable crowds. Thanks.

Get a few drinks and some BBQ at Bert's and sit outside and enjoy the music.

Russell Street is great and I like the breakfasts at Farmers. Vivios isn't my place but otehrs love it. Joey's meatcutter (now Cutters) makes a great burger but is a dive so consider the clientele.

If it's a nice day you're pressed for time, consider the sausage pita sandwiches at the meat market (I don't remember the name.) just south of Hirt Cheese, right next to the wine shop. The sandwiches are made to order with your choice (choices) of sausage and cheese, etc. It's strictly carry-out. They are simply delicious and the price is right.

My two cents:
Best breakfast is at Farmers Restaurant, My favorite for lunch is Russell Street Deli and it's usually fast.

PS - My consider the clientele comment isn't about the clientele at the place but the clientele you will be bringing. If your people like dives they will ove it, if they want quaint and charming they probably won't.

If inferred incorrectly my clientele comment would sound terrible.

Russell St. is great for lunch, right next door to Zeff's, which is better than Farmers for breakfast. I agree with Neilr that the sandwich shop next to Hirt's is a great option if you're pressed for time. Vivio's is good as well as Bert's. If your company likes Thai food there's Sala Thai in the renovated Firehouse down the street.

Thank you all, good advice. I don't which one I'll go to yet. All I know is that the packed market and diverse crowd is definitly a face of Detroit that I'll want my out of town guests to see.

But oh so sanitary. jjaba loved it when you pulled a dill pickle out from the bottom of the barrel, then washed your arm when done getting a few peppers, and a few dill tomatoes out of others.

jjaba, now that's a market.

Vivio's upstairs is the lair of the local denizens, great Bloody Marys, spicy or not. Also a good possibility of running into a few forumites there. (We refer to it as Heather's Saturday Afternoon Social Society or Heather's SASS, for short). It's a friendly group that will draw strangers into the conversations without blinking.

Butcher's Inn is due to reopen under new ownership anytime now, you'll have to see as the original announced opening date was to be Superbowl weekend. If anything like its last incarnation, it will be a hot spot.

Jt1 stick to your original assumption, either way Cutter's is a welcome Detroit dive and we try not to frighten the tourists.
