I have a chronic bad neck that is flaring up right now. Does anybody on here get theraputic massage (I'll give you all five seconds to stop giggling) in the Oakland County area? I try to keep my spendage local so I don't have to drive too much. Especially with this damn neck.

I do, but its in Northville, not really Oakland county. I've got bad neck/shoulder issues myself. I've found that when it's bad I'll go anywhere for a massage!

essential massage on woodward and 9 mile in ferndale (just north of 9 on the west side of the street). all they do there is massage, so their overhead is low and the prices are the cheapest around. an hour i think is about 55 or 60 bucks. and if you get the new save on everything/spree hybrid coupon book in the mail, there should be a coupon in there to get a few bucks off.

Essential Massage is my recommendation as well. My boyfriend got me a gift certificate for an hour long massage there and it was wonderful. I think they might be linked with a chiropracter around that area, if you don't already see one you might want to look into that for your neck as well. You'd be surprised at how it's all connected. You might get the muscles relaxed through massage, but in doing so you may find that something is out of alignment that may be causing your muscles to tighten up to begin with. Muscles have "memory" so if something else is causing the muscles to react a certain way, it'll just continue unless you get the root of the problem straightened out (no pun intended). Anywho, my point is, your neck can benefit from both, so go for both if you can. I can't praise massage and chiropractic enough.

if you've got insurance, go back and tell him to write you a referral for Physical Therapy...I get free massages 2x a week, along with heat and ultrasound.

MRI's are overrated in this instance. $20 says its your posture...my PT says thats usually the problem with neck/back muscle issues. Thats my problem that I'm trying to correct.

I have a long-standing chronic problem that stems from an auto accident I got when I was sixteen (sitting in the backseat with no seat belt on, big time whiplash). My doctor has looked at it, several times. What I need is to get in good physical shape (I'm working on it) and a good deep tissue massage. Although this is the worst flare-up I have had in a long time, and in a week I can't take time off.

thanks all!

I feel your pain ma`am, I've finally begun to take the steps to fix my problem (really don't want to go into the details)...I'd seriously see if your doc can get you into PT...the heat, stim, and ultrasound really help my muscles...

If you really cared about Detroit you would look for a Detroit-based masseuse. Sorry couldn't resist dropping a Campus Crusade for Detroit-style guilt trip. 2026foeva!

I understand Jelk, but I also want to support businesses around my home, and that is RO and Ferndale. I spend locally as much as possible, plus I hate to drive my car everywhere! If I can walk or ride my bike I try to do it.

Course that won't help my neck.

ORF, as mentioned before, definitely go to Essential in Ferndale, here's their website.

http://www.emtherapy.com/index .html

As far which massage therapist to see, I've seen Cory and would highly recommend him. He'll definitely take the time with you to evaluate your situation.

I was only kidding ORF, you know how some people around here go Peter Gammons everytime someone suggests doing anything except purchasing drugs outside the city proper. Good luck with your neck problem, hopefully you can find some relief.

Glad to hear it! Now don't go crazy and do something this coming weekend to put it all out of whack again. :-)

Did you see Cory, if not who did you see?

I've really got to get back in there myself.

ORF we're going to have to meet up one day. We can go grab some Vietnamese somewhere on John R, swap recipes, talk about what makes Anthony Bourdain hot, you can fill me in on Redford (which is where I've lived, sans 2 years, since 1988) and then go to Essential and get massages; although one of us won't be able to see Cory. ;)

Have fun at Tastefest, I'll be spending my weekend tearing down a rickety old Florida room. My boyfriend will be out of town so I get to do the demoltion myself. I think demoing it will be fun, but I'm sure I'll need to book a good rub down after I'm done with this project.
