Does anyone here have accurate knowledge of how far back student records are available for Detroit Public Schools? We were told that computerized records only go back to about 1970, and we are looking for elementary school records from 1963. Surely the DPS must have paper records someplace accessible. No...I take that back...my cousin used to work for the DPS, and he quit a high paying job because he couldn't stand the disorganization and mismanagement of funds and documents. I hope someone can shed some accurate light on my question. We are trying to put together a class reunion for our elementary school graduating class, and while we think we have everyone's name, there may be a few who none of us on the committee can recall. A list of names from graduation would be ideal, but any info we can come up with will be helpful (I hope). Any ideas or sources?????

That figure is about right. Records from the mid-60s were gone five years ago when we looked for them.

Which school?

Yes, and best of luck determining DPSSAL athletic records; specifically track & field, swimming & diving, baseball, golf, tennis (anyone?), field hockey, girl's basketball.

May seem trivial to most folks...but it breaks my heart.

Hey didn,t some of the closed schools have their records just left and then pretty much tossed around the place?

Not sure if this will help you Grumpy, but this is what my Mom used to obtain her records.

Pam, thanks for posting that information. I faxed my request off yesterday and this afternoon I got a pleasant phone call from one of the staff. She was very nice and accommodating and told me that my record would be sent out in today's mail.

Since my school has closed I was afraid that perhaps the school records were no more. But she said the transcripts had all been recorded, and she had the info right there in front of her. She said she even had my graduation picture! We joked about my spit curl from hell and my 60s bouffant hairdo! :-)

Somehow, I'd not be very upset at all if my school records were destroyed. :-)

we were trying to obtain class lists for several years. maybe that's the stuff they don't have. i thought the original post was for a class list for an upcoming reunion. if you are able to get that, please let me know cause i would still like the class lists. i'll request my transcripts as well. thanks for the info.

Chuck, I hate to disappoint you, but I really was a lousy student. Probably C average, and flunked a few courses in HS. Too busy being the social butterfly, I guess. Made it into WSU, but only lasted a year because (besides working full time) I was totally bored with it. But it sure turned out all okay for me, anyway. :-) :-)
