Bobby08 stated...quote:Italo disco, please elaborate? It is essentially instrumental Disco that sounds like Techno Music! For example, an instrumental beat of the Bee Gee's tune, 'Staying Alive' rev'ed up to a Techno beat. blksoul_atcha! Obama 08' |

Blksoul_x Um, I will pass on that one, I'm not the biggest fan of techno. My fav would have to be Disco House. Ok, I will pose the question for debate. What year were the best house songs made 1978 1980 1985 ??????? I would go for 1978 |

I remember spending many nights and evenings in Buy-Rite Music on Livernois asking/begging Cliff and John to let me hear the hottest tracks out. I think I may have spent over $200 dollars each visit. Back then, you could get 12inch singles for $3.99! I think the 'imports' were around $7.99! I think my first 12inch I bought was John Rocca's, 'I want to be Real'. blksoul_atcha! Obama o8' |

'Keep On' was termed by DJ's in the 80's as 'progressive music' along with many other post disco tunes__progressive music was a 'subcategory' of house music or vise-versa. If you were spinning at a House Music gig' and you did not include some D-Train stuff, you would being shouted off the tables! Zulu, great call on 'Goodbye Kiss'! blksoul_atcha! Obama o8' |

Did anyone catch Roger Sanchez in Detroit last night? (Saturday, the 18th). I saw him spin here in Atlanta a few weeks ago and it was one of the best house shows I've ever been to. If you saw the show, review it here. I'd like to hear about it. |

Ok, about 10 years ago in this thread Bobby08 asked me what Italo-Disco was but I didn't see the question until just now. The most popular disco artists who had songs that I would consider to be "Italo-Disco" would probably be Gino Soccio, Giorgio Moroder/Donna Summer, and Patrick Cowley/Sylvester. All of which I love! Italo is characterized by it's (often) faster beat than traditional disco, it's use of synthesized and non-synthesized instruments, the happy vibe, and heavy use of arpeggiation. I believe that what is considered by most to be the first Detroit Techno song (A Number of Names - Shari Vari) has a lot to do with Italo but it adds some different elements to it. Again, I'd like to make a shameless promotion for the night I DJ at (@ Oslo), Fierce Hot Mess. http://i137.photobucket.com/al bums/q229/adrieldetroit/Nov08F HMA.jpg http://i137.photobucket.com/al bums/q229/adrieldetroit/AMAFHM fback.jpg Come around on Friday the 7th and/or the 21st. I (Kelly Pink-O) will be playing with Todd Osborn and Brian Gillespie. We play anything, really. Acid house, hip hop, techno, funk, disco, electro, 80s and so on. Thank you to all who have come and danced so far. Especially those in the crazy clothes. |

I don't think those songs to which you mention would fit under the category of classic 'Italo-disco'. It is True that those songs used a heavy amount of synthesized rhythms, and Gorgio Moroder was instrumental in influencing that style, however Donna Summer and Gino Soccio (perhaps debatable) would be better fit underneath the true Disco sound, at least in terms of the amerikkkanized' definition. Also, while it's true that Shari-Vari was a heavy synth sound, perhaps it would be better fit under the Techno subcategory of 'Freestyle', a style to which is perhaps influence from late 70's funk and disco synth style of the late 70's. That in itself would make it a amerikkkan born style, specifically a 'Detroit-Techno' sound, which most europeans desire and love. I would bet to say, most amerikkkan's have not had the benefit,(via radio, etc) of listening to a true Italo disco tune, that is unless, one has visited some clubs in New York or Miami etc. Detroit has never had a huge following in the 'Italo-disco' style. The sound track from 'Scareface' would help identify some early classic 'Italo-disco' tracks. Again, I would not include Cerrone, Donna Summers, or Number of Names within the classic Italo concept, that is, unless you are simply referring to the use of synthesizers. Here is a mega-mix sample of classic 'Italo disco', enjoy...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =k9pQLEkiS2Y blksoul_atcha! Obama o8' |

Islandman, thanks! Yes some early style 'Italo-disco' was some great stuff. I believe later the more euro-style sound was heavily influence by some good ole american funk! Although this classic Disco song THP, Too Hot For Love' is not heavy on synth's and not labelled 'Italo-disco', it has to be an early influence of the style and format of early 'Italo-disco'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =kmKq43RBv4g ...by the way, I have perhaps the only copy in the states of this rare classic 12 inch. If anyone is interested, holla at me! To continue with euro-style flavor, Trance music is another sub-category of early disco/Italo synth music. Like 'Spaceboykelly' mentioned, this music (Trance) is specifically identified with 'arpeggiation', in other-words, in this case, a music that synthesized notes are played back to back without the combination of other chords like drums etc. I don't care for the current styles of Trance, however the early style stuff, pre-rave phenomenon was some classic stuff. Here is a taste of classic Trance... Push, 'Strange World' is perhaps the best post Italo/pre Rave-Trance songs ever, enjoy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =0rmUmLXUk3E blksoul_atcha! Obama o8' |

"The sound track from 'Scarface' would help identify some early classic 'Italo-disco' tracks" Blacksoul-X, I would say the Scarface soundtrack was more of an early "space disco". And by the way, the soundtrack was like a coma " the disco scene part" that was! And Black, dont take 5 days to respond to my post! |

Ok, now we can't talk about house music and the entire electronic genre without mentioning the era of 'Electro' or 'Freestyle' dance music. You might say, what specifically is 'Electro dance' or 'Freestyle' dance music? Electro was basically influenced heavily by New York cities Latin population which emphasized a heavy dance rhythm(classic 2 and 4 beats) along with sweet baseline and heavy percussion with super-fly high hats on the fly.(Think planet rock beat) I believe the term 'Freestyle' came from Latin DJ's creative ability in delivery of their set mixes. In other-words Latin DJ's incorporated scratching, sampling, cut mixing into their dance sets. Prior to this, Disco dance DJ's would simple blend the more structured Disco tunes from record to record. 'Freestyle' was born out of this creative style of DJ'ing. As far as Detroit, we have to thank DJ's like the Electrifying MOJO and JEFF MILLS aka 'The Wizard' for promoting and bringing many of the classic Freestyle beats to the D! Here are some classic examples of Freestyle Music that was popular in Detroit back in the day.... Man Parish, Hip Hop Bebop.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =7oiFmNltmmY Quadrant six...body mechanic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =jr_O4iNPBx8 Yazzo, Situation... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =wPiMbg4yVWk Freeeze, I.O.U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =7UhrkoLrXiI and how bout this all time MOJO fav... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =zUrLN2tkoRQ How about some of your fav' Freestyle beats? blksoul_atcha! paint the whitehouse Black o8' |
