I remember sometime back you mentioning that today is the day!

So I wrote it down.

Thanks for all you bring to this forum and greetings to your bride.

Tomorrow, you return to being merely DetroitYes! Resident Ex-Detroit Cop & Waggish Raconteur Extraordinaire.
We are Ravine, and we bow to you, sirrah.

Aw, thanks, everyone. Lowell, your memory is like a steel trap! We had a fine open house party here in beautiful Henderson, NV, with about 40 friends and family. Gang included seven retired DPD members, including me.

Fareastsider and the rest: The secret to married success is two words: "Yes, dear." But I don't have any trouble doing that because she's usually right (not counting geographical directions, of course).

We were married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Dearborn and had our reception at a VFW hall on Dix in Lincoln Park. And here's the charming couple:

Har! Ray, it's funny how, when one sees photos from "way back when," the people in the photo seem, somehow, to look much older than they truly were.
Your bride, with her sweet & gentle face, looks terrific.
You look like you were, at least, about 32 years old.
Just f'in' witcha, Ray. It's a great shot, and thanks for sharing it with us.
P.S.: Love the little wave of hair cresting just above your forehead.

For what it's worth....

When we got married, September 20, 1958, the defending champions of the NFL were.....the Detroit Lions.

Maybe it was us that put the curse on them.

Congratulations to you and your wife. Keep on going (my parents had their 62nd this year, so you have a ways to go).

If my wife and I make it another 3 months, we'll be half way to 50 this year after getting a late start.

"Any advice on how to keep it going for 50 years."

I'd have to say by having fun, being able to laugh at yourself, and not being afraid to admit it when you're wrong on something.

On major topics, we're two peas in a pod (politics, religion, sports, etc.). I think our only major differences is in TV channels. Well, I solved that years ago by "his 'n hers" TVs. And I have earphones hooked up to mine so neither of us hears the others TV. (Last night I'm watching GB-Dallas; she's watching QVC. It don't get much different than that.)

But we sure laugh a lot, and that makes it all so much easier.

In 28 years, I suppose I have learned more than one thing, but the one which comes to mind, right now:
Even on the rare occasions when I am convinced that I'm in the right, I let some things go just because I find that being mad, and staying mad, at my wife just causes me to feel lousy. It boils down to selfishness, in a way; I'm happier if I'm not upset with her.
Checkers & chess are fine, as board games, but folks who conduct relationships that way are losers.

Good thinking, Ravine.

I've gotta add one more "must" to a successful marriage that I overlooked, and it's most important. Finances.

A couple has to agree on purchases, bill paying, etc. Our finances have always been together in one bucket. For the last 30 years, I have just let Marge do all the bill paying, etc. She was a bookkeeper all her working life, so I'd be a fool not to let her handle it. I'm a financial idiot anyway. I trust her completely.

There were times in the past where money was tight; where we let the credit card balance get a little higher than it should have; where we blew some money we shouldn't have. But it never got out of hand, and I think when a couple has major financial problems, the whole ball of wax starts to melt down.

That's one of the reasons I feel such pain for young folks today starting off life with up to 100k in student loan debts to pay off. Sure, things will likely work out all right, but the pressure of that debt surely keeps the world from looking as bright as it should. To those who went through that (I didn't), I salute you.

That is exactly me. Married to an accountant. I highly recommend it. The only money I spend on my own is on gas, and that's just fine by me.

Allow me to add my congrats to your milestone, Ray.You are ahead of me by two years, as in 2010, my wife and I hope to return to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island where we worked and met and have a celebration. If I can still fit into my old bell captain's uniform, I might pick up enough tips to cover the partial cost of a night's stay.
And after 50 years, are you still on probation?

Ray:
I have been out of touch (like on the keyboard) for the last three weeks and I just discovered this post.
I am delighted to offer my most sincere approbation and congratulations, especially to your beautiful bride and to you.
I think you and I know the secrets to the longevity of wedded bliss,,, and sometimes, blitz!
Most of those secrets are well grounded in all of the above posts.
Love and need are the two prime ingredients.

Oh, and don't forget "fun", Tp. Even on a routine trip for groceries, we seem to find something to bust out laughing about. Usually some driver doing something stupid....Marge will say, "bet he's got a California license plate", and the car will pass us....showing his California license plate.

Hey, WE find it funny! (Detroiters: Replace "California" with "Ohio".)
