I've found, in general, the beer in front of me is my favorite!...at least until the next one.

On a hot summer day - don't matter as long as it's icy cold.

In the States I'll order a Corona. In Canada it's gotta be Canadian.

What Jiminnm said - Pilsner Urquell. The original Pilsner.

Also the "original" Budweiser (from Czech Republic).

I am also a fan of Wernesgruener (that you can pick up cheap at Aldi), Sam Adams, and Warsteiner.

If I want something a little different, then Hacker-Pschorr Hefeweizen or Schlenkerla Rauch Beer (smoked beer).

In summer, I sometimes like a Corona or even a Rolling Rock when it is hot out.

But I have a special place in my heart for Herforder Pils after working there for a summer.

Mostly I drink regular beer for the financial savings. Rapid heartbeat returning......

I’ve fallen in love with Bell’s Hopslam: enough hops to appease any hop-head, but just enough honey to gently soften it without making it sweet.

My all-time favorite beer was a draft beer poured at the Clarkston Union last year. Bell’s had 20 beers on tap, including a keg of Expedition Stout & Double Cream Stout (thanks for the correct name, Vas) mixed & aged in an oak barrel. It was heaven in a glass.

I learned to make my own version by putting a ½ tablespoon of Makers Mark bourbon in a large, bulbous glass, then adding 6 oz each of Expedition Stout & Double Cream Stout. Let it warm to 54-degrees or thereabouts, & it’s almost as good as the original (although chemically, it can never be the same).

Sherwood Brewing Company had an excellent Anisette Stout over a year ago. The oatmeal stout they had this past winter, in addition to being a great pour, was an excellent flavor addition to my beef stroganoff recipe.

You guys may enjoy George Wills column today. It is all about how Beer is the best health food.

I tend to be a creature of habit, sticking with a light domestic. But, Landshark, Carlsbad Light, and Mike's hard lemonade make a nice treat.

Goose Island Hooker's Ale, Mad Hatter IPA, Dark Horse Crooked Creek IPA and Flying Dog Doggie Style APA this summer.

I have some leftover Goose Island Summertime (koelsch style) that I am sipping to recover from a major yard project.

Awfavre,

Whats up with this beer aging stuff? I skimmed an article in the NYTimes on a guy in OR keeping beer in a cave for years.
Are you aging anything?
I'm thinking of putting some brews at my folks place for the long haul. How long was that Exp/DCS barrel aged for? This might take Beer love and affection to a new level.

Great spots for great beer---
Berkly Front, Berkly
Tap Room-Detroit border with Grosse Pointe
Jacoby's Downtown DEtroit
Foran's Downtown Detroit
Park Bar Downtown Detroit

Go out and try New Holland brewery from Holland, MI. I'm really impressed.
Now the only things we need to do is get these 8$8.99 six packs down to $4.99 like the micros in Boulder, Colorado used to cost in 2002 and probably still do.

Hey Vas.

I don’t know how much you do/don’t know about brewing, so forgive me if I tell you something you already know.

Aging beer in bourbon barrels has become the latest trend for brewers. It markedly softens the sometimes harsh roasted flavors in stouts, especially. Although, many are doing it with Imperial-style beers with higher ABV % & porters, too. One of the best beers I’ve ever had was Arcadia’s Shipwreck Porter aged in bourbon barrels at the Winter Beer festival this year. It was my favorite beer at the festival.

I don’t know how long the Double Cream Stout/Expedition Stout was aged, but they’re doing it with lots of beers at Bell’s. They aged their Cherry Stout in a bourbon barrel, which made it more palatable for me (I can’t stand the regular Cherry Stout). I guess they did an Imperial version of the Oberon called Uberon, & they aged it in a bourbon barrel. Most of these bourbon-barrel aged products are available only at the Eccentric Café in Kalamazoo.

As for aging in general, it allows the yeast to keep doing its thing, which will change the character of the beer over time. Most craft beers are meant to be consumed within a short time for this reason, & a beer tasted closer to its born-on date will taste very different than when tasted a few months later (for me, the later consumption usually tastes better). For example, my “house brew” is a maple porter, & I try to have some on hand at the end of the year every year. The beer at the end of the year tastes vastly different in December than it does in June – usually darker, more mapley, less malty/sweet (although there’s little sweetness in this particular recipe).

To prevent this flavor mutation, you’ll see brewers do the primary fermentation thing for a week or two, then put the beer in cold storage to force the yeast to go dormant. As a general rule, aging only works well for beers made with LOTS of hops or with high ABV%. The alcohol & the hops act as a preservative, so it’s possible to age the beer without it spoiling. So, if you want to age something in your parents’ basement, make sure it’s got lots of hops or lots of alcohol.

I have an imperial stout I made back in February that I’m aging until December or January. Aging for me means leaving them in the bottles in boxes & letting the yeast lazily gnaw away at the heavy malts for a year or so. It’s my first time trying this recipe, so we’ll see how it goes.

I’ve been to all the local places you listed except the Berkley Front & the Park Bar. Methinks I need to try them soon.

New Holland is a favorite, although I’ve only been to the brewery once, many years ago. Their Red Tulip is a fascinating take on red – more malty, & the Black Tulip Belgian is heaven in a bottle.

All this talk is making me thirsty! :-)
