I had posted about this in the main forum, but got no response. As you appear to be one of the preeminent scholars on all that is West Side, I thought I'd ask you directly. Several years ago, Comcast aired on one of its local access channels a documentary detailing a Jewish family named, I believe, Sossen, and their candy store/soda jerk. It primarily focused on the surviving brothers of the founders, and people from the neighborhood. Do you have any info relating to the store or the documentary? Internet searches have turned up nothing.
Thanks in advance...

jjaba can't place Sossen but will do some checking for you.

The newsboy photo IS jjaba, 1954. He was running a route for a kid over on Blaine and Dexter Blvd. The house is a classic brick duplex from that neighborhood. Full sun on a summer Sunday morning with papers so thick you could only carry half a route. Looks like Detroit News.

If Ray1936 can pull up the address, jjaba will tell ya if the customer is Goldberg or Weinstein.
Great photo, eh. That was us right there, Ray1936.

jjaba, jonesing for a Pepsi with Planters peanuts right now.

Tried enlarging it, but it's just too fuzzy. It does appear to be five digits, though.

Sundays. Up at 5:30 a.m. Pedal down to the station, but go into the greasy spoon on Grand River for a hot chocolate. Maybe even a hamburger once in a while. Good breakfast. Then loading up those massive papers and off to the route. But the work day was done by 8:00 a.m. and it was off to figuring how to avoid all the homework I had...........

Big deal-----Big deal----jjaba on his old Columbia or is it a J.C. Higgins? Not much of a load in comparison to what we Detroit Shopping News carriers put on our bikes. Sure,we had the papers in the basket over the handlebars, but then we also had saddle bags over the rear wheel filled to the brim, too.
No traditional (posed )photos with smile on our face, either. DSN carriers grunted and groaned for their buck per delivery.

jjaba's bike is a Columbia. Good work Rock.
DSN carriers onliest problem was not getting caught going down alleys delivering to garbage cans. jjaba took out the garbage and he'd find Shopping News in there all the time. If you had to collect for the papers you delivered, you'd lose all your customers quicker than jjaba can type Jack Q. Robinson. Rake your bushes and under the leaves, Shopping News. Look under your family 1950 Pontiac, Shopping News. Hole in basement window, Shopping News. Ladder on the roof, Shopping News. Fishman's Waste Paper Company on Grand River Ave., bundles of Shopping News.

Find us a photo of a Shopping News carrier with a load like Rock describes. jjaba rests his case, your honour.

jjaba, Westside Detroit Times at your service.

Thanks Ravine, jjaba will enter it in the Detroit Shopping News HOF, LOL.
How The Rock ever became a lawyer behind delivering the Shopping News should be in Ripley's Believe it or Not.

jjaba.

That is really cool! What are the chances of somebody posting a photo of a Detroit newsboy and it is jjaba?

The chances of that are much more remote than are the chances of Jjaba pulling Ray's well-worn leg.
