It was just reported on my jazz research list that the great saxophonist Cecil Payne passed this morning. He was just shy of his 85th birthday. Payne was in the first wave of beboppers, recording with J.J. Johnson in 1946 (on alto), and was a member of Dizzy's 1946-49 big band and recorded some fine soli on bari. He created beautiful, startling sounds for over six decades, playing with Randy Weston, Machito, Lucky Thompson, and also composing part of the score for The Connection. He was Marcus Belgrave's cousin and occasionally visited Det to play the odd gig and hang with Marcus. RIP, Cecil.

Another one lost. RIP

We're losing the greats at an alarming rate.

Thanks for the update Jim.
