Just thought I'd pass this along since there was speculation that many of the cafes, including Detroit, were going to close. Florida's Seminole tribe is buying the Hard Rock brand — the famed rock-n-roll-themed cafes, a collection of memorabilia and two casino hotels — in a deal worth close to $1 billion. I thought that Detroit supposedly had the largest opening ever for any of the Hard Rocks. Are they not doing so well here in Detroit now? As soon as Detroit has a Hard Rock Cafe and all, of course it becomes not as cool of a chain, go figure... (Message edited by charlottepaul on December 07, 2006) |

I thought it funny that the BBC article on this from NPR was tagged with the line that this tribe is the ONLY one to not sign a treaty with the US. |

Hard Rock Cafe hasn't been cool since the 80's. Actually, I'm not sure if it ever was cool. |

Hard Rock Cafes aren’t cool? Now what am I suppose to do with my collection of Hard Rock shot glasses from 56 different cities in 32 countries (lol)? They do come in handy for parties as long as everyone remembers what city they were using. The coolest Hard Rock I’ve been in was probably in Cairo, it has large windows overlooking the Nile River and everyone was very friendly. The worst one was in Belfast; bad location, lousy service, etc. Anyways, the Seminoles recently opened two Hard Rock branded casino/hotel resorts in Florida; one near Tampa and one in the Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale area. I’m sure their main interest is in the Las Vegas property. I hope they don’t start closing or selling off the cafes. Consistent standards and familiarity is much of the attraction for a chain like this. |

Ramcharger, The Seminoles don't own the Las Vegas property, that was sold to Morgans Hotel Group Inc. earlier this year. |

Not this again... About a year ago, someone posted that he heard that the Hard Rock was closing. It turned out that the actual story was that HRC was doing so well at lunch, they set up tables outside the restaurant in the Compuware atrium. After a trial run, Compuware wanted the atrium tables removed. Somehow, THAT got mis-interpreted into an erroneous report that Hard Rock was closing. (Apparently Compuware's concerns were addressed, since the extra seating is still there.) Can we please, please end the speculation that the Hard Rock is closing? The last time this rumor was repeated, the Free Press did a piece on it. |

Interesting, thanks for the info Mark. The two casino hotels mentioned it the article must be the two in Florida. They probably had shared ownership and now the Seminoles are sole owners. |

Read this article (three years old). Notice that one of the investors in Hard Rock Hotel (Chicago mentioned in this article but others too) is Becker Ventures LLC. Maybe Mr. Becker will use some of his profits to rehab his David Whitney Building. http://www.hotel-online.com/Ne ws/PR2003_4th/Oct03_HardRockCh icago.html |

The Hot Toppings website said they were set to close HRC a month after the Super Bowl last year. Perhaps this was what they were referring to? That info came from one of the top Hot Toppers over there, not to be mistaken for Supergay. |

I've been dragged to Hard Rock cafe's by giddy, white-trash co-workers or classmates, all over this tacky country of ours, even in London and Paris. I've always hated them. Having said that, the few times I've been in the Detroit HR it hasn't been a horrible experience. I would never touch it if it were, say, in Troy though. I really doubt that Detroit's was the biggest opening...I can't imagine it topped HR openings when it was kinda popular in the 80's...say in Chicago. But, who knows, we certainly have our share of white-trash co-workers and classmates right here in the metro area. They are a force to reckon with, that's for sure. On a side note, does this now mean that the land and structures of HR's are not bound to US law? |

Quinn, who's white trash and isn't that akin to using the "N" word? Wouldn't Appalachian migrant be a nicer way to put it? jjaba, LOL. |

Hardly, Jjaba. Whereas I frequently use the adjective phrase "white-trash" to describe people, including myself in fits of self deprecating laugh fests, I would never use the "n" word to describe anyone, or use it for any purpose other than to show how wrong it is. Nice try to drag this discussion down into the gutter. On second thought...scratch that. Would you be more comfortable with Trailer-Trash? |

No offence Quinn. So which part of Ky. are you from? Louisa, Ashland? It is a fact that people in Ky lose both wife and trailer when divorcing down there. Careful, Itsjeff and Lowell might take offence to calling them trailer trash. Please, no slang hurled at jjaba, Westside Bar Mitzvah Bukkor. LOL. |
