So, I had long heard the story that Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. had met in Detroit, specifically at the Book Cadillac. This clip verifies the first part. Start at the 4:50 mark... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =kIr_IQx53cs |

Per A&E's Rat Pack bio, it was at the Michigan Theater. |

I read one book that claimed it was at the Capitol theatre in NYC. I saw Frank and Sammy (and Liza, when she was thin)in 1988 at the Fox, worked all five shows. Sadly, that era in entertainment has lost most of its standard bearers. Tony Bennett is about the last man standing, at a vey healthy 80 years old. |

I kept thinking about Sammy this morning because Carmen kept saying, "Hello Detroit." |

Legend has it that the Michigan Theatre was where Frank Sinatra went solo. He announced to Jimmy Dorsey, that he was leaving the Jimmy Dorsey Band and going solo. |

Yup, my bad. Brothers Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey each had their own band after they had a falling out in the 1930's. I just named the wrong band! (Message edited by Gistok on November 23, 2006) |

Both stellar instrumentalists, the "Battling Dorseys" sometimes came to blows over choice of tempo, or set lists, or other dubious items...they loved to drink, especially Tommy. Jimmy was an ace alto man whose virtuosity was widely admired in the music world. Tommy had a smooth tone and could really play ballads. He wasn't a great jazzer like Teagarden. Tommy had a good ear for talent (Frankie, Rich, Bunny Berigan). The Fabulous Dorseys had a TV show in the 1950s that, according to legend, Bird was watching at the time of his death... |

What the...? Deano, Sammy, Frank and Joey? In Detroit? They're ba-aack. Sort of. Cast of the "Rat Pack", currently playing at the Gem Theater, pose before the Addison where they are living during their three month Detroit run. |

PS - Both Dorseys were very familiar with Detroit, having worked in various Jean Goldkette orchestras in the 1920s, including the Book-Cadillac unit. |
