Yet another potential grocer is how you should have read that. |

^ Not unless you're a slob and dine exclusively at "Party Store". If that's the OP's definition of a grocery store for Detroit, then I'd only place a "rolled eyes" smiley behind the OP. |

This is anything, but a potential grocer this is nothing more than the developers wish list. It didn't even say they were talking to interest companies |

There's a grocer in the Millender Center (entrance on Brush Street). I walked there for an apple one nice day for lunch. It's small, but a downtown grocer to be sure. So, small the name doesn't even resonate. |

For this building I wonder if the owners have purchased or are considering purchasing the lot behind the building? A private parking lot would definitely add to the appeal of the upcoming condos. |

Or do what I'd do, park at Millenium or Merchants Row. Or take public transportation. |

What the hell would they be doing on Dexter? The Woodward line can be the white people's bus if that's what you mean. |

Stay tuned for a major announcement in the next 60 days about a "GOURMET MARKET" opening in the CBD. |

In today's review of the Signature Grille there was this mention of a market opening in Riverfront Towers http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.d ll/article?AID=/20061124/OPINI ON03/611240394
quote:Coming within the next few weeks is the Signature Market, which proprietors Chuckie Sugayan and her sons, Steve and Bert, describe as urban and upscale, if not quite Papa Joe's. It will have prepared foods as well as a full line of groceries and liquor in 5,000 square foot space below the restaurant on the first floor.

I completely forgot about this place, probably due to the fact that you can't just walk by it. I was trying to eat there way back in July, but just kinda gave up when I couldn't find it. |

The Asian Village Marketplace should also be opening soon. They started putting up drywall a couple weeks ago, and one of the workers told me they hoped to be open before Xmas. |

I also heard something about the Illitches making an announcement in January about their new "developments", which is supposed to include a gourmet grocer between the Fox and State and development of the parking lots in front of CoPa. Honestly, it's nice rumour, but I just don't believe ANYTHING until I see a building with a business in it. Having been back home this past week, I have noticed much more foot traffic than 2 years ago. MUCH more and at off times, not just during and after events. With the continuous addition of condos in Brush Park and the area, plus CBD dwellers, we are underserved and need retail. I have heard nothing but empty promises for the last 6 years... someone please surprise me... |

I have heard nothing but empty promises for the last 6 years... You must have been in a coma for the last 6 years to not see the new retail in the downtown area. |

Nothing but empty promises for the last 6 years? What empty promises are you talking about? The Riverwalk? The Kales Building? Campus Martius? Compuware HQ? Merchants Row? Permanent Casino construction? The Book Caddy project? ------------ Don't confuse real development projects with vague suggestions or ideas. The Signature Market and Asian Village Market are real developments that are under construction. Most of the "failed projects" in Detroit were never real projects in the first place. This thread is a perfect example of this mindset. Look at the story again...
quote:The developer is seeking retail, a restaurant or grocer to occupy the ground level space.
The developer is simply looking for a ground floor tenant. It could be a shoe store, a Thai restaurant, a coffee shop, a bookstore, a Men's clothing store, a grocery store, or a million other things. There is no promise or plan for a new grocery store in that space, and I don't see how anybody could consider this to be a plan/proposal for a new grocery store. |

Yea, I guess the Motown Museum and the Woodward Village were "vague suggestions"? I see the things downtown and that's encouraging, but when it comes to my blocks on Woodward and the surrounding area from Grand Circus north to Mack, where's the retail? New condos? yes! But no local (by foot) retail support. All I want is a grocer I can walk to (within half a mile). I look forward to the January announcement and bricks and mortar. 'nough said. |

Walk to? Detroitduo, are you forgetting you're in the Motor City? Get in your car and ride! I'm all for grocers and the like, but gourmet? I don't want another Harbortown Market, but I'd frickin' KILL to get a Meijer up in here. And the only reason I'd kill is cuz I know asking nicely isn't going to get it done. |

Hell'll freeze over before Meijer moves to Detroit, and it would be a great development for Detroit if they did. They've made it quite clear that they aren't interested in a Detroit store. They know they can build just outside of Detroit and still bring in Detroiters, unfortunately. |
