Greetings. Someone asked me if John F. Kennedy ever gave a speech in Grand Circus Park. As I don't personally know, I'm turning this one over to the forum. Does anyone know if he did? When else did he come to Detroit to speak? Were any forum members there?

He gave a speech on Labor Day in 1960 at City Hall. That's why the site after it was demolished it was renamed Kennedy Square.

Wasn't there a historic marker on the Book Cadillac about a Kennedy speech?

Thanks for the speech links, I looked at some of those already. Its sick that Dingell was there, as a Congressman. What an old man.

In a related story:

Ted Kennedy got drunk and killed a woman by driving off a bridge... in a car that was made in Detroit!

When asked why he took the better part of a day to touch base with the cops, his speech was slightly less impressive than his brother's.

On Labor Day 1960 John F Kennedy kicked off his campaign for President in front of 100,000 people on the site of what is now One Kennedy Square. Eight years later Robert F Kennedy did the same

There is a terrific photo in the Detroit Almanac that shows JFK on the left and RFK on the right and has the crowds merged, so it looks like they were standing there together.
The crowd fills Campus Martius & Cadillac Square.

I wish there was a statue on that site commemorating those events. Regardless of your political viewpoint it is an interesting and important story and location

I believe that every Democratic presidential candidate from FDR through Dukakis kicked off the fall campaign with a speech at Detroit's labor Day parade. I believe Clinton broke with tradition in 92.

My parents still have an 8mm home movie of the motorcade, went down 6 mile, out near Hamtramck. I think. This was the 1962 visit.

I have that photo or photos by Tony Spina that shows JFK on the left and RFK on the right and has the crowds merged, so it looks like they were standing there together.

Of course Dingell was there. As the dean of Congress, he's been in the public eye since taking over his fathers congressional seat as a young man in 1955.

If he stays in congress for another 3 years, he will be the longest serving member of all time!

In January when Nancy Pelosi takes over as Speaker of the House, John Dingell will (because he's the dean) swear her in as Speaker. And then she will swear in all the House members.
