Does anyone know where I can purchase old black and white photos of Detroit in the 40 and 50 or any website where they have such pictures?

I believe the Detroit News and Free Press sell pictures through their website.

Or you can check out the Wayne State library system which maintains a whole database from the Detroit News collection. I'm not sure what their policy is though. All of their pictures are watermarked but its a great resource. I'm sure you can call someone there.

Check out the Burton collection at the Detroit Public Library. They have an enormous collection of historic Detroit pictures. Unfortunately, I believe that you now have to pay a fee to access the collection (it was free until about 2 years ago). There is a card catalog system. The pictures are organized into folders. Tell the librarian what you want and they will have someone find the file in the vault. I know that they have files by street, by building, by person, and by business. For example, you can find a folder of pictures of the Hudson's building. The folder will contain dozens of pictures of the Hudsons building both inside and out. If you want a copy of any picture that you see let the librarian know and they will arrange to have it copied. Sometimes there are slides or negatives available, but usually they have to have someone come in and take a picture of the picture. The prices are fairly reasonable, but it may be hard to blow a picture up too much without the negative. I have four pictures on the wall of my home from this collection: 1) a picture of Saints Peter and Paul Church circa 1920 (I was married there and it was a wedding gift for my wife); 2) a picture of the Jefferson Woodward intersection circa 1915; 3) Campus Martius in the 1950's; and 4) the Fisher building from the 40's (there is a Frankenmouth Beer truck in the foreground)

Good Luck!

John King sells old Detroit items, there a whole section of stuff. Photos too.

There are companies that sell reprints of Library of Congress photos on eBay.

Designerguy, welcome to posting on the forum. BTW, Saks was not located downtown. It was in the New Center neighborhood in the Albert Kahn Building, kitty-corner to the Fisher Building.

"Ookpik" might possibly have some downtown Detroit images for sale in his collection of 1940's Michigan negatives:

What I would like to do is get some photos that are fairly large for wall-hanging. Any tips?

Patrick, have you considered old postcards? While they are not large, if they are nicely (not cheaply) matted and framed, they can have a large impact. A grouping could have a theme such as Belle Isle, downtown, Detroit hotels, Grand Circus Park, and so on.
