The data is from the final FBI Crime Stats on a /100,000 residents basis. Cities of 20,000 residents or more are included so it may skew negative for the smaller cities: Top 50 listed and Detroit if it is not in the top 50 Murder: Detroit coming in at lucky #13. Finally only cities (some of the stats list metro region only and I cut these out since we are looking at cities) over 750K. I figure this gives an idea of where Detroit stands with other very large cities: Murder: Rate City 39.29 Detroit3 25.60 Philadelphia 16.42 Dallas 16.33 Houston 15.59 Chicago 15.00 Phoenix 13.97 Columbus 13.49 Indianapolis 12.81 San Francisco 12.63 Los Angeles3 11.44 Jacksonville 11.31 Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department 6.84 San Antonio 6.64 New York 4.01 San Diego 2.86 San Jose 1.65 Honolulu Rape: Rate City 70.93 Columbus 69.52 Philadelphia 65.85 Indianapolis 65.38 Detroit3 48.06 Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department 47.19 San Antonio 45.68 Dallas 42.63 Houston 36.35 Phoenix 29.56 San Diego 28.88 San Jose 28.55 Los Angeles3 25.76 Honolulu 23.77 Jacksonville 22.96 San Francisco 17.40 New York 0.00 Chicago As you can see Chicago does not report rape stats. counting all cities listed the big winner is Vernon, CA with a rate of 246,808.5 auto thefts per 100K residents. Of course the city only has 94 residents and had 232 motor thefts in 2005. (Message edited by jt1 on September 28, 2006) |

Adrian is not that big If I recall and their is a University there. May skew the data up. There were 26 rapes but only 22,000 residents listed. I am guessing smaller cities with college campuses aren't a fair comparison since so many college kids are never counted as residents. |

Truly a heartbreaker to see Michigan cities in every one of the top 20, 3-4 times on some lists. Detroit is on every list except Larceny where it is #50. |

So basically all the cars in Vernon, CA were stolen. Maybe they'll implement light rail mass transit now that no one has a car. I've got a hypothesis on why Detroit's Larceny-Theft number is so low, relatively speaking. People aren't reporting the thefts since they know 911 won't come "Code 3" for a stolen lawn mower or bike. They also don't have insurance (most renters) or don't want to raise a red flag with the insurance company if they're homeowners. Especially since a lot of people have high-deductible policies that would barely compensate them, if at all. My gut tells me there's a ton of unreported larceny. |

Jt1, does the FBI now list METRO area crime rates too? if so that would be most illuminating. I've looked for these rates for quite a while without success. |

Seems like Benton Harbor gets a bad rap based upon stats: 10,860 Population 0 - Murder 13 - Rape 10 - Robbery 215 - Agg Assualt |

It is not my gut telling me that there is a lot of unreported larceny. It is years of experience. Most people in Detroit don't bother reporting larcenies. In the suburb where I work, people will report it if someone takes a garden gnome off their porch. People in my old neighborhood in the city would get stereos, bicycles, city trash cans, and garden gnomes taken on a weekly basis. Someone always had something missing from somewhere. But, there's no point reporting something when you know nothing whatsoever will be done. Heck, I had over $5000 worth of stuff taken when my house was burglarized, one of the neighbors knew who was responsible, and nothing was ever done. They sent an evidence tech out a month after the crime to dust for fingerprints on a bedroom window (*eyeroll*). People won't expend effort for no result. Just as the rape results are skewed for college towns, larceny reports for large cities are going to be skewed as well. |

quote:Jt1, does the FBI now list METRO area crime rates too? if so that would be most illuminating. I've looked for these rates for quite a while without success.
I think it is only for metro areas that report them that way. May have to do with the policing or who maintains the data. On the list I have the only metro areas that are listed (as opposed to individual cities are): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan4 Louisville Metro3 JASCO Metropolitan Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department The fbi may have metro data but I never really checked. You can check around at 222.fbi.gov under reports and publications. |
FJW718 alot of angry people in Saginaw i take it? Aggravated Assault - Detroit coming in at #7: Rate City 2255.77 Saginaw
The difference between Saginaw and Flint (and some parts of Detroit) for example is that in summer Flint is alive in the fringe and "bad" neighborhoods. People are everywhere up and down the street, on porches, in yards playing games, BBQing, etc. Saginaw is so dead it is spooky. It's a very edgy town for a lot of reasons. Saginaw suffered from racism and segregation in the 60s and 70s and blacks moving to predominantly white areas. The west side was always very nice until the late 80s and now parts of it are feeling stress as well. The upper and straight middle class whites who grew up in the city are now headed for the township. Businesses that were almost landmarks have closed or moved with them and the purge has been extreme even over the past twenty years. I think Saginaw has now hit bottom but it has hit it hard. Saginaw also has seen a lot of GM jobs leave and if you think Detroit or Flint was dependant on the auto industry, Saginaw puts that mindset to shame. A city of about 90,000 pretty much dedicated to the auto industry and unwilling to change its ways will suffer. Saginaw is a very tense city across racial lines, job lines, and due to a collapse in economics that is striking. Additionally Saginaw serves as a drug hub for all points north and they have a lot of gang problems because of it. In Flint and Detroit I think the drug trade is run more by crews than by gangs. "Crews" can do business while gangs have trouble with territory and protecting their right to each and every customer. Hard to say really. I spoke with some prominent citizens in Saginaw about gangs and drugs and they tend to point the finger at Detroit but it’s hard to say how these supply lines work. Their police force is woefully undermanned and the State Police actually supported the city for a long time (may still) because of the lack of funds at city hall so they can’t handle the crime problems. They have a lot of politics that involve west side vs east side and black vs. white and they are on display at every city council meeting. There are some good people in Saginaw but there is too much infighting on the streets and behind closed doors for the reasons I’ve already mentioned, and probably many more I’ll never understand. The only two cities I've ever been to that I felt this tension were Gary and Youngstown. They are like islands of culture in an otherwise normal world. Detroit even at its worst still feels as though there is something to grab on to, Saginaw does not. My Mom grew up there and I have family in the city. It is night and day from what it was like even as recent as 1990. PS: How do you use the quote function on this site? |

jt1, yeah that's what I thought, thanks tho. For years now, when the mood strikes, I've tried to determine and compare various metro area crime rates. (It comes from a heated argument I had years ago about DET's high rates.) It seems to be impossible to garner this info. Even finding COUNTY crime rates and piecing things together that way is hard to do. Oh well ... |

All of the data you seek is available on the Michigan State Police Website. They do not have the 2005 stats though, the latest are for 2004: http://www.michigan.gov/docume nts/Ce-off04_140087_7.pdf You can find county totals, as well as totals for all major crimes in each city in that county. Just find the census info on your own and you can determine murder rates per capita, etc. |

wf, thanks for the link. I found something similar before re MI and some other metro areas out of state. As I said piecing together this info is hard to do esp when you consider other out of state metro areas. (you have to know your geography and weight the info you collect by population etc.) |
