There was an interview with Mayor Kilpatrick on WWJ this morning at 7:50am. The interview focused on the success of the Tigers, the economic benefit to the city and it's an image booster for the city. Toward the end of the interview, Mayor Kilpatrick stated that he is having a meeting with the city building and development dept this morning to talk about Tiger's stadium. He alluded that he would like to make an announcement today and that it was a good time to make an announcement due to the success of the Tigers. He was litterally chomping at the bit to make an announcement. THE MAN WAS GUSHING!

Sounds like he has wised up a little about making premature announcements.

If he's THAT happy, maybe he got the big box retail that he's always wanted for the site.

I'm kinda confused. Did KK say he was going to make an announcement today, or that one is upcoming in the future?

Only thing about a big box store is that the site is quite small for a big box store. I hope that the site will be used for housing and retail, but i wouldnt mind a big box store either, both seems like a win win, if we can get either.

For those of you coming late to the party, here's the deal: The City dragged its feet for years on deciding Tiger Stadium's fate because the mayor really, really, really wanted big box retail on that site.

There weren't any takers.

Earlier this year it was finally announced that the a mixed-use propsal, offered years ago, would be adopted.

But I get the sense that if Wal-Mart finally came around, the City would kick the mixed-use plan out the door. That's why I made the above remark when it was reported that the mayor was very, very happy in discussing Tiger Stadium's fate.

What do you mean big box? They're (allegedly) gonna make it a park and save the playing field, remember?

That's the mixed use proposal itsjeff is talking about. I just want to see them do something with it before i die.

(also, I've decided that I have 8 years to live)

Should still be a fuckin stadium. Fenway and Tiger Stadium opened on the same day. One still thrives one is left to rot. I'm getting fed up with this city.

Some would argue that Fenway and Wrigley are also rotting while they thrive. Remember, it was only a few years ago when pieces of Wrigley concrete were falling into the seats. Now they have lovely netting suspended along the bottom of the upper deck to keep people from being bludgeoned to death by one of the cathedrals of the game.

One way to quickly and easily improve this city would be to clean up your mouth and your posts, Chitaku. Totally unnecessary to get your point across, and portrays you (and Detroit) as "ghetto"

HA please Karl I highly doubt my swearing on an internet site portrays the city of Detroit where around 900,000 people live as ghetto.

Here is link to the audio interview on WWJ. His comments about Tigers' Stadium are in the middle. You will have to listen to comments about DPS in the beginning.

I think that if its a big box store then it could be Wal-mart, because since a little while ago Wal-mart has been talking about creating some of its stores in "blighted" inner-city neighborhoods, so that could be us. A possibility

Before everyone starts talking about Wal-Mart, the original post mentioned a possible announcement with respect to the stadium site and made no mention of big box retail. Itsjeff made the Wal-Mart comment half in jest.

Seven years to the week that the last game was played in Tiger Stadium and the place is still in place doing nothing for the city. Dennis Archer's adminstration should have had a plan in place for the site before the last game was played there. How may years did Olympia stand vacant before it came down? About the same or more it seems.

If wal-mart does build on the site, which would bring jobs to the area, lets hope they pay equally and give the same benefits as they do to their employees in the suburban areas. Here in Los Angeles, they are very unfair to minorities.

D2dyeah, Walmart's benefits are the same to each class of employee across the board - they do NOT give better benefits in the suburbs.

And "minorities" in Los Angeles are treated exactly the same as everyone else in their job category.

What's the minority applying for jobs at Wal-Mart in LA? White people? No, seriously, because big-box and fast food is nearly entirely Hispanic (or so it would seem) here in Chicago. I can only imagine LA.

We're getting way ahead of ourselves. I only noted that the mixed use project was "Plan B," since the mayor really wanted big box on the site. I speculated that if he was especially happy when saying he would soon have an announcement, maybe his original plans came to fruition.

We really don't need to get into Wal-Mart's wage structure just yet.

Big box is plan A?! That's a sad fate for the venerable site, I'd probably prefer continued rotting over that.

Mixed use at least has some potential to save some integrity and historic value of the corner.

We know the mayor wanted a Big Box, but how does that make it Plan A? Kwame's powerful, but the plan is for the planning department and commission and then the city council. The mayor, like anyone else, has but a say in what happens to the site. My speculation is that he's simply waiting to formally announce the concept that was chosen a few weeks back, and perhaps its become even better. I never got the impression that Kwame was overly excitied about Big Boxes rather he was just excited about bringing down Tiger Stadium for anything new. He seems to salivate at shiney new developments, whatever they be. He seems to be of the persuasion that any demolition in place for something new is good.

I think it made it Plan A because that's what they pursued for years and years. Then, when that didn't work, Plan B came into play.

I am pretty sure that is how a Plan A and Plan B scenario works. Am I wrong? I could be wrong.

Heard this morning on WWJ that the Mayor has backed off making an annoucement regarding the development of Tigers stadium after meeting with the MEDC? Is that the correct agency? WWJ stated that demolishing or tearing down sections of the stadium is complex and has not been full addressed. No announcement will be forth coming in the near future. Darn!
