I'm on the 15th floor of an apartment at Woodward and Hancock. In the last week I've seen two or three plumes of smoke around the incenerator, the most recent one appears to be due south west of the incinerator, north of warren a block or two.

What the hell keeps burning?

I finally caught the story behind the smoke that I see occasionally from the silos on the northeast corner of Eastern Market...

...apparently a scrapper or two has discovered that to be a decent place to burn off the insulation on the 'recovered' copper they collect, so it can have a higher value when they take it into the scrap yards.

It alarmed me when I saw it at first, but it happens about once a month...and it IS just south of the incinerator...by about a mile. From some vantage points it could appear closer.

Dunno why I just heard every siren go off downtown about a half hour ago, though...I always hate hearing them, especially during a Lions home game at the end of the full moon.

Yes Skamour14,
The crazy folks who don't give a care about their ghettohoods are being careless and continue to burn down their house. Don't forget we have arsonists, too.

I thought you meant east of the incenerator, because I was going to say the Better Made Factory. Every Morning they be on the ball making and shipping those potato chips. Big plumes of smoke blows out of their stack, such as today when I was passing by it going downtown.

I'm pretty sure it was just a house fire that got out of control, driving down 94 you could smell wood burning. It looked to be right on Chene though.

It was a 2 story commercial building on a corner in the neighborhood(not Chene or other nearby large streets). The type with apartments up top and retail on the 1st floor. All vacant. 2 Blocks south of I-94 and a couple blockks east of I-75. First engines and ladder not getting ahead of fire due to full involvment. 2nd Ladder on the scene did the job with additional water....

I wish I had a high frequency scanner radio positioned there. They're a great source of information in these situations. That's what reporters use. You can hear what the firefighters say in realtime. Any Radio Shack has them.

Detroit FD, PD, etc. is now on 800 MGH. A $45 scanner will now work. Expect to pay $375-$500 for a good 800 MGH scanner.
