In St. Clair Shores, every neighorhood has a rat problem. And there's a bunny problem in Wyandotte and Lincoln Park neighborhoods. They multiply all over the place. Just set up traps. If you stop the feed you stop their need. |

Here's 2 solutions to get ride of the rodents. 1. Use oil of peppermint and spread it around your backyard or garden. Rodents hate oil of pepperment. 2. Bring in some owls. Owls are the rodents natural predators not only it keep the rat population down it also keep the bunny population down. |

Danny, I live in St. Clair Shores (11 Mile/Little Mack), and I have never seen a rat anywhere around my property... But on the otherhand, my neighbors cat looks awefully well fed.... It's all a matter of whether there is a food source nearby. I bet that the city is inspecting a lot of alleyways around the restaurants along Harper and Jefferson. |

I LIVE AT 12 AND HARPER IN THE SHORES, AND THOUGHT THAT THE REASON FOR THE RAT INFESTATION WAS BECAUSE OF "THE BARTON HOUSE" BANQUET HALL DEMOLITION. HEALTH DEPARTMENT SHUT THE PLACE DOWN FOR GO FIGURE, RAT INFESTATION. WE HAVE GONE THERE AT NIGHT AND WATCHED THE RATS RACE FROM SIDE TO SIDE ON THE HORIZONTAL REINFORCEMENTS ON THE RESIDENTS PRIVACY FENCES. QUITE AMUSING. ALSO, ON A SIDE NOTE SINCE THEY HAVE TORN THAT BUILDING DOWN THERE IS AN 50'S STYLE BILLBOARD ON THE SIDE OF THE NEIGHBORING BUILDING THAT IS PRETTY INTERESTING. |

Janesback, Mothballs are NOT the solution to the rodent problem. Most rodents can resist it. Stick with the oil of peppermint and owls and cats. Gistok, You may see a rat or two in your backyard so be prepared. |

I had a field mouse issue and my cat is brain damaged and won't hunt them. I got some sprinkle stuff at ACO and it worked wonders. Also keep out other smaller critters. Cost 15 bucks for a shaker bottle full of this stuff (it's in with the mousetraps and such). It doesn't kill critters, just makes them go away. A gun would be in my hands if I saw rats, they are just scary, all I can think of is BEN. |

Props to Detroitteacher for her abbility to work a Ben reset into this thread!... On another note, I found a rodent killer at a local hardware store today. It was a hose that you hook to your tailpipe from a car. The other end you put in the rat hole and start the engine and let it run for 30 minutes. FYI, make sure it is not close to your house!!!!!!!!!! |

Urban Rats-ugh. One blustery November night, when I was a deckhand tying up the S.S. Guthrie at grain docks in Cleveland, a fat "wharf rat" ran up my leg and under my parka. I let out a very un-manly shriek, dropping the mooring line into the drink as the rat clawed into my belly trying to escape. I can still feel the whiskers as it brushed over my cheek as it popped out of my jacket, jumping over my shoulders. The mate on the mooring wench found my "rat dance" amusing. A Detroit shipmate told me about him and his pals, drunk (imagine) pouring gas down a rat hole in an alley and lighting it. They expected the rats to come scurrying out so they could pick them off with air rifles. Unfortunately, when the dropped the match down the rat hole a nearby garage exploded. Yep, the rat tunnel also opened into the garage where the fumes collected...ka-boom!!! |

One of my fondest childhood memories is going rat shooting in the alley behind our house on the Westside. My grandfather got us both BB guns for my birthday, and we would go out night after night and pump and shoot away. It was so easy too. There were so many rats that all we had to do was stand still and wait for them to run across the alley. I was a pretty good shot. But stopped after I hit one big fella in the shoulder, and he slowly turned around and started walking towards me!!! Never went out rat shooting again. They are hard to get rid of once they infest an area. Looks like it is going to be good business for exterminators and ratproofing small businesses. And BB gun sales!!! |

I found this in my driveway (also eastside, GP) a few weeks ago. I thought it was a baby possum at first. My neighbor had his sewer drain back up earlier in the year, and when they dug it up, they found two dead possums stuck in the pipe. I suppose the dark coat makes this a rat?

Pardon my ignorance, but where does one acquire oil of peppermint? A few weeks back I was taking out the trash, and thought I saw somthing moving along the top of our chain link. We live in Redford Twp, near 6 and Beech. The old guy behind me used to have a rat poison box with "Redford Township: Do not touch" (or somthing like that). Got rid of it when his wife got a little dog. Anyway, sure enough, I came back out with a flashlight and it was a rat! We have cats and dogs... probably why it was up on the fence. I'd like to take some sort of measure to prevent them from trying to get in the house... that one sounds great! (Thanks Danny!) |

I HATE 'possums! When we lived in CA, the neighbor had a family under their deck - mama and babies. Our dog (Samoyed) was a young pup at the time and was outside in the yard during the day while we were at work. Needless to say, we had to keep dry kibble out for him to munch during the day which was probably an easy feed for the 'possums. He took out one baby but, one night, we came home to mama hissing and spitting in the garden. In CA, sorry, you can't shoot them so hubby had to beat the crap [not literally] out of it with a shovel. When carrying it to the trash, though, we both had to wonder if it was really dead or "playing possum". On a similar note, a friend who lives kind of in the boondocks was sprayed by a skunk his dog startled at 3:30 the other morning. Skunk was rather perturbed and kept spraying and hissing until friend got his shotgun and stopped the action. Within minutes, the cops pulled up responding to a shots fired call. Luckily friend got off with a warning but, Teach, even if you have a gun and know how to use it, not sure if it's worth dealing with law enforcement. (Amazing how quick they can respond to shots in the outlying area..._ |

Any health food store will have it in the essential oils section. I put some on cotton balls around the house when we had a mouse invasion one winter. I've since planted peppermint plants around the house. So far, it's worked, there are still mice in the yard that the dog catches, but none in the house. |

I read somewhere that a nonpoisonous way to do in rats was to mix concrete in with flour along with a bowl of water. They love flour and when they get thirsty and drink, the concrete hardens in their tummies. I have never tried this. |

I agree, I don't like guns at all. I'm a horrible shot, at that. We have a great animal control here in Dearborn. We also aren't allowed to keep trashcans outside of our garages. They must be enclosed and have a lid. Have never seen rats here, although these little field mice were driving me nuts until I got that sprinkle stuff from ACO. Solved the problem. It doesn't kill them, just makes them go away and once they leave near my house, they are no longer my issue. |

I read last week that the rats are moving into most of SE Michigan. Royal Oak, Berkley, Clawson, etc. I work in an office complex in Madison Hts. I saw a dead rat near the dumpster last week. Looked like a car got him. They totally creep me out. If I saw one even near my house, I think I would leave and call an exterminator. My niece lives in St. Clair Shores and she told me about the rat problem before it hit the press. Her neighbor has tall grass with dog crap piles in it. The rats love it. She and her neighbors called the city and they made them clean it up, but it was too late, the rats were every where. I read in the paper about one man in SCS that caught over 50 in his yard. I would have been LONG gone after number one. |

I have a funny story about my experience with a Detroit rat! I live in New York and as you well know this city has a nasty rat problem too. New York rats are everywhere and aren't afraid of people. You can find one almost on any subway station. Last Christmas I came back home to visit my brother and was telling him about the rat problem here. And as I was telling him that Detroit doesn't have a problem like that a huge 13" rat ran across the street. It was so big that it barely made it over the curb. New York's rats aren't that BIG! 313 |

Detroit313, have you read RATS, Observations on the History & Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants by Robert Sullivan (2004)? He discusses the rat situation in NYC. It is very readable, highly entertaining, and quite informative. I recommend the book. |

First the whites left and now the rats. But don't worry cause Kwame will save y'all when he finally gets DARTA up and running. Then y'all can come and work for Wal-Mart in Livonia. Or, come and shop and enjoy the low prices thanks to DeVos job creating more jobs. In China, Burmuda, India, Mexico, Brazil, Alabama, Indiana. And a few more low paying retail jobs in Michigan. |
