I just saw on Fox 2 that "W" magazine has a 52 page spread on "Detroit and the people who live there." What is "W" magazine and where do I get it. The report said that it is all positive about the city. If it's a national magazine, this could be big! BTW Kate Moss is in some of the pictures too. |

Yeah, this is the publication of the shoot she was in for when the Bohemian House opened up earlier in the summer. I saw it Saturday morning at the salon in Birmingham where I get my hair cut. Before anyone gives me any grief for THAT, I know the owner...and the woman who I go to lives just west of Indian Village. The W article is really well done. Not nearly enough Eastern Market, though. Just some brick wall behind Bert's grandson. |

Any publicity has the potential to be good publicity but the cynic in me wonders whether "W" magazine has a geniune interest in promoting the city or are they just simply pandering to a large population center and market? |

It's the September issue with Christina Ricci on the cover...I got it in the mail last week and was totally surprised the way the feature turned out. Because the spread was in 'W' i was expecting it to be all about the women's fashion using Detroit solely as a backdrop. Instead, the photos focus quite a bit on the people and places in Detroit. I'm definately saving this issue. |

I have a friend who works for W Magazine. She had to borrow my buddy's Pistons jersey for Kate Moss to use in the photo shoot. Not sure if they actually used it in any photos but it made for a good story... |

You know, the Pistons aren't really iin Detroit. (I have to point that out after a heated debate with a coworker about defines Detroit. She has a very narrow definition.) |

My friends are pictured with Kate Moss dancing at The Bohemian. See Kate Moss dancing here I didn't go because I didn't feel like paying the 10 dollar cover charge. |

That Christina Ricci cover shot is incredibly hot...she's come a LONG way from the Adams Family movie. I dunno, 1953, Ms. Hill makes some powerful points in her essay. She doesn't sound very dumb to me...other than, of course, living near the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club. The Metro Times must pay very well... Sport, Whatever, man's gotta get his hair cut SOMEWHERE. I choose to support a wonderful woman's establishment, and another one's direct livelihood. Cafe has been there, and I think she liked them, too. They are fabulous people who treat me very well...and very occasionally a few of the suburbanites overhear our lively and enthusiastic discussions about the city, and are drawn away from their innate fear of everything South of 8 Mile Road. Perhaps it is my mission field, evangelizing for the city!! PLUS, they have two hours free parking in their structure...very smart. I do it like a military strike, in and out. I pretty much loathe Birmingham, after many years of working retail there. Too much Love of Money there... |

I don't know what is more amusing in the photo. Is it the obvious star-struck fashion mistake: Or the stoned-off-his-ass person in the immediate background: Or the guy lovingly checking out the stoner: Or the attention whore way in the background mugging to get into the shot: Overall, a great photo. It made my morning. |

W is a fashion magazine based in NYC. They really don't have any genuine interest in promoting Detroit at all, but they do have a genuine interest in exploiting whatever interest their might be in the city. And that's great. The shoot actually does a great job of really showing Detroit as it is, and not the Detroit the Chamber of Commerce everyone wants to see. And what little copy their is is entirely respectful of the city. As for W pandering to a large market ... have you seen the way people dress around here? Trust me, W is a niche magazine here. It's a niche of a niche. There's no way they did this to increase market share here. |

PS - That review is hilarious. Anyone who expected Detroit to be more than a fashion backdrop for a photoshoot with Bruce Weber and Kate Moss has never paid attention to, well, Bruce Weber or Kate Moss. It's that old Detroit defensive act ... which I find really amusing because that photo spread captures the Detroit you see if you spend any time in (or driving in) any of Detroit's neighborhoods. The reviewer says it's too bad they didn't analyze the "potent social message" of the Rivera murals at the DIA - but it's a fashion magazine, why the hell would they? "You used us!" Good LORD. What whining! Detroit is shown off in all it's Detroit-ness ... not trying to be LA or NYC or Chicago ... and suddently it's a bad thing. |

Dialh4hipster: Your correct that they (quote: "really don't have any genuine interest in promoting Detroit at all, but they do have a genuine interest in exploiting whatever interest their might be in the city")but you don't think a positive and respectful story won't translate into a positive consumer reflection on the magazine? How many people probably bought this magazine just for the coverage who probably never even flipped through it? "W" should at least see an increase in magazine sales from around Detroit. Metro Detroit is one of the largest media markets in the country. An increase in sales outside of continued subscribers coupled with the potential to attract new subscribers helps attract future advertising dollars. All I'm saying is that editorial decisions are not devoid of discussions surrounding economics and growth potential. |

I agree that they will sell more magazines in Detroit. Absolutely. I got the last copy at the Borders I went to yesterday. But I dont' think it would be a significant bump. I DO think that this increases interest in Detroit as an up-and-coming spot in the US, and that W was trying to be on the cutting edge in scouting an area that was fresh, had a unique perspective, and gave cool backdrops. Ultimately, I think this shows there is a growing interest in Detroit as someplace where things are going on, although I don't think the cultural zeitgeist has managed to put its finger on exactly what those things are yet. But it's promising. |

I am pretty sure no one is going to scan in 52 pages for you. It might be worth the $4.95 to just pick it up. At least you're supporting a magazine that at least paid attention to Detroit. Or how about you walk to a newsstand and flip through the magazine yourself? You can buy like a beer and a half with the money you save. |

Problem is getting hold of a copy. Anyone know where there are any left that a person with the $5 can pick one up? Been to the downtown Borders twice and they were sold out both times. They said they got a second shipment of 60 copies and sold out of that one. They said they hope to get another round of them when the unsld copies are picked up from other stores. |
