From degc.org:

With the recent success of the planning and development initiatives on the East Riverfront, we now look to the west to plan for continued opportunities and economic revitalization. Please come share your thoughts with the planners, designers, engineers, and economists who are assisting the City of Detroit with the planning effort for the West Riverfront District - the area bounded by West Grand Boulevard, Fort Street, Third Street, and the Detroit River. The first of two public meetings will be held on Tuesday August 29th, 2006 at Wayne County Community College (1001 W. Fort Street) beginning at TBA P.M. Refreshments will be served.

A friend at work told me that Don Barden owns a big chunk of the west riverfront beyond Riverfront Towers. Anyone familiar with this?

I live at Riverfront and I barely see any of the land directly west in front of the post office ever getting used with the exception of people fishing. Its all an open field until the Free Press facility.

There is a vacant lot immediatley west of the Rivefront towers that is a total eyesore...If the riverwalk ends up going all the way to the Ambassador bridge as originally planned, this would be a great spot for a mini park of some type...

Not sure who owns it though...

Thejesus: The lot you descibed as an eyesore is where the barges park to prep for the fireworks. Management at Riverfront was also using it for construction parking for the recent condo conversion. Whoever owns it doesn't take care it so whatever happens to the land will be an improvement.
Habitat Co., who owns Riverfront Towers, may own a small piece next to the towers.

Wasn't this also the area where Don Barden & Michael Jackson wanted to build a casino?

Does anyone remember that proposal?

I would love to see a drawing of that project. I think it was a gigantic bubble made of glass with roller coasters and all kinds of crap attached to a gaming area.

I thought this land was slated for the new Olympic Village. We should have a nice RiverWalk for all those athletes.

"We should have a nice RiverWalk for all those athletes."

They'll be able to stroll up to the 'Freedom Gondola', fly over to Windsor and pick up a hooker. Sweet! What Olympic Commitee wouldn't go for that?

Maybe the West Riverfront Committee could get new sidewalks for Downtown Windsor also.

Does Satan aka Matty Moroun control a lot of the land?

Here is an apt article entitled "Troll under the Bridge."

My former employer used to own the building at 1915 W. Fort (the building on the southwest corner of Fort and 12th) he had a big chuckle when all of the Don Barden-Michael Jackson posturing was going on. Barden claimed to have options on everything up to the bridge, which would have included that building. My boss hadn't heard word one from Barden, or anyone representing Barden. He sold the building two years ago, and Barden did not buy it, or inquire about it.

If Matty Moroun makes $1 billion dollars a year, according to the article, then why the hell can't he spend $150 million dollars on the MCS?

I think the Free Press is still using their Riverfront building, but not to the extent as in the past. every day, there is still a Freepress truck or two at the loading dock on the east side of the plant. However, I have not seen any boxcars of paper being dropped off at the west end of this plant in quite a while. Maybe their switching schedule has changed. Anyone know for sure? Also, when was this plant constructed?

It's because the riverfront plant is closing this year and everything is being transfered to the Sterling Heights plant.
