I don't understand the thinking on the Diet Riot billboards you see around town. The first time I saw the sign, my mind tricked me into thinking the the Windsor Casino buffet was going to cause a Detroit Riot. Diet Riot looks way too much like Detroit Riot. The scars and consequences of the '67 riot are still vivid in the minds of many Metro Detroiters.

I'm actually going to the Windsor Casino today. I'm thinking about lodging a complaint. Am I too oversensitive here or do others think the billboards are kind of inappropriate?

You are too oversensitive. When I first saw those signs, I originally thought it said 'Detroit', not 'Detroit Riot'.

Detroit casinos support Detroit and public schools in Michigan. Keep your money here as opposed to Windsor.

Jt1, what if a suburbanite posted "Troy businesses support Troy and public schools in Oakland County. Keep your money here as opposed to Detroit"?

Provincial thinking will not help make Metro Detroit a vibrant and diverse community.

his point is...he should support where he lives, and if he is so upset by these signs, there are ample replacements in detroit, with the added benefit of supporting the community

"He should support where he lives"

I agree, tourism sucks and is stupid.

Motorcity, let Jt1 do his own clarifications.

My original point stands: Provincial thinking will not help make Metro Detroit a vibrant and diverse community.

I normally go to Greektown. I was there yesterday after the Tiger game. Just wanted to spend an afternoon in Windsor today. I do like the smoke free environs at Casino Windsor.

The signs struck me as funny, that's all. Evidently, not really that big a deal.

I agree with the sentiment that we all should support our international metropolis. The photo at the top of this page has both Detroit and Windsor in it. Windsor is a nice occasional visit, even if you do have to go thru the hassle of dealing with Homeland Security at the border.

I thought the same thing the first time I saw the signs, which have been up probably at least 6 months, maybe a year. One, "Detroit Riot" came to mind. Secondly, you could easily just read it as "Detroit." Neither of which I would consider all the beneficial to Windsor trying to draw in people. I mean seriously, getting think to think about the Detroit Riots to draw in gamblers? Regardless of their intentions, I don't see the add as drawing many people over.

Something else kind of ironic, the sign directly in front of Motor City Casino heading northwest on Grand River is for Windsor Casino. You would have though Motorcity would have locked up the signs facing both directions, or at least the side facing the casino, as opposed to the one they got that is read as you leave the casino.

You might want to get yourself tested if you are having troubles with reading simple billboards or are so fascinated with the subject of "Detroit" that you see it even where it does not exist.

Ottawa - The income from the casinos helps the city but also helps education throughout the enire State of Michigan.

Due to the major differences in how schools are funded I would prefer my dollars and the dollars of others in the State to help fund education in the State of Michigan.

Spending money in the casinos helps Troy.

While Detroit and Windsor may complement each other well they are still in separate countries with separate economic systems. I support spending where you live especially if it helps fund education throughout the State of Michigan.

When Casino Windsor starts supporting education in Michigan I will happily direct people there, until then I encourage Michigan residents to gamble in Michigan.

I was addressing Ottawa's question.

I don't know about re-invested but they pay a whole lot in taxes and, I believe, that a part of the revenue/profits go to Michigan schools.

Bottom line is that the Detroit casinos do more for Detroit and Michigan than Casino Windsor. I would prefer people lose there money here as opposed to Windsor. I am not advocating a ban on Windsor or saying people shouldn't go there. But if you are just going to sit somewhere and gamble it might as well support your city/State.

State wagering tax paid to Michigan in 2004: 111.4 Million. That doesn't take into account the amount paid to the city.

http://www.michigan.gov/docume nts/revstaxes2004_81812_7.pdf# search='Casino%20taxes%20paid%20to%20 Detroit'

Based upon State taxes (12.1%) and city taxes of 9.9% that would mean $91M for the city based upon the 2004 profits.

Yep, the casinos do nothing for the State and City.

Not to mention the charitable contributions made to local non-profits. Last year, MGM and Motor City donated to Corktown to the tune of 100K. Greektown and Windsor to the tune of $0. I don't gamble but if I did, you can guess where I would waste my money.

It was obviously intended...it is relatively well-known that the majority of people interpolate meanings from the letters...haven't you seen that e-mail that is all jumbled up?!

One silly billboard I just saw driving south on I-75 up by Great Lakes Crossing is one for Motor City that is just some pretty white female face wearing a pair of sunglasses with flames on them, like the hotrodders have on their '57 Chevies.

Whoa, what's the point to THAT?

"You'll stare SO much at OUR one-armed bandits, that you'll think your eyes are on FIRE!"

Diet Riot, Detroit Riot.

The words are to close to think there's nothing to it. At the bare minimum the people at the ad agency that came up with this ad were trying to be little too cute for their own good.

I'm not saying this applies to everyone or even a majority of people who go over to the Windsor Casino, but I know a lot of people (suburbanites) who go over there almost exclusively who say they do so because they feel it is a lot safer than the Detroit casinos. This as could be very subtly playing into that thinking. I can't help but think that putting up the word riot on a billboard in Detroit is trying to reinforce the attitude that Detoirt is not a safe place, especially among those who are prone to believe it.

Haven't seen ANY of these examples on a billboard within the city limits, Susanarosa.

Doesn't make the initial poster any less paranoid...but simply using google does NOT a convincing arguement make.

Good work, though.

I've actually seen the word combination diet riot before it being on this billboard and saw the multiple examples of it after doing a search on it when I first read this thread. I'm not sure how these examples prove or disprove what they were trying to accomplish with these bilboards. The only thing it proves is that they didn't originate the word combination.

Yak,

Welcome!

I just caught the picture behind the ad...dunno IF she's on the billboard...but it is obvious that they are pining for calorically-challenged Americans to flood their parking lot.

THAT is even MORE offensive than the Detroit slur, to me.

HEY Fatso! Come over HERE and gamble, we'll feed ya! Just LOOK AT our chocolate cake for dessert...baah, baah, bleet!

What did Marie Antionette reportedly say JUST before the French Revolution?!

Over thirty posts discussing a billboard for Casino Windsor??? Seems to me the advertising agency came up with a winner. If half the people that read the sign have to look twice that's a damn good billboard.

To their ad agency's credit, I just saw a billboard on the Lodge that reads "A Pair always beats a Full House", showing a couple reclining on a bed.

Obviously going after the parental weekend-escape market, pleasant and upbeat...and clever.

Kudos due where they're earned.

Kudos to THIS PR campaign.

(won't I be embarassed IF it's for another casino, but I'd SWEAR the sign read Windsor Casino...I'm sure someone can correct me IF I'm wrong...I don't study these signs at 55 mph in the rain)

I thought that too when I first saw the billboard. I'm glad I'm not the only one who did a touble-take... maybe its effective marketing, it made me read it. I usually blow by the billboards, or dream of ways to blow the ugly things up.
