Small number, 200, but this of course is a positive for the city and merchants downtown. 200 more faces to feed. Now, it would have been even better if those 1,500 jobs in Southfield moved downtown. But, lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Great news. They have a very large building there on Cass, and assume that they can put more staff there.

Funny how the phone company switching equipment gets smaller and smaller all the time. So a lot of floors formerly devoted to central office equipment are becoming office space.

The switching equipment in all phone company central office buildings everywhere only take up a fraction of the space than they did back in the early and mid 20th century, when the buildings were full of switching equipment. Now the buildings are mostly empty (unless they move other workers in).

Gistok-my father worked at that building for 45 years, maintaining switching equipment. There used to be an auditorium on the 20th floor (it was turned into offices in the 70's--drop 2x4 ceiling, the whole FU routine) that was quite nice, it had a barrel-shaped ceiling, and a room off of the lobby that resembled a men's club--walnut paneling (real inset panels, not forest city sheet goods) and high backed leather chairs. They had a Christmas program for us kiddies every year. We would get to see the floor our parents worked on, then put our coats and boots in a big rope handled bag. We saw a show with a magician, cartoons and there was always a telephone call from Santa, the MC would ask him when he was going to get there. He arrived at the end, a big deal. After the show we went back downstairs to our coat-bag, and it had candy and little toys inside. a different era, a different phone company.
