The Free Press has a story about this traffic stop that I'm sure we'll be hearing MORE of in the coming days. Couple problems with the early story...where is there a stop sign ANYWHERE on Woodward Avenue?! When do police pull over people at 3 a.m. up in Boston/Edison?! (although I've heard that they HAVE been busy on lower Woodward, lately) They said it was south of 'West' Chicago...do they call Chicago West and East at Woodward?! That would make sense, just never saw the West when I lived there. But it's got everyone in a bunch, from Homeland Security collection (FBI and Immigration) all the way down to an unspecified southern state, because he: 1.) is an illegal immigrant 2.) is from an Islamic nation, although they did NOT say he was Muslim 3.) happened to be carrying multiple driver's licenses, license plates, many maps, and various other items of interest 4.) has an outstanding warrant from said unknown southern state for some reason nobody bothered to ask about This is NOT multiple choice, this guy seemed to be poised to help someone do something outside the law, yet was caught through some dumb luck and few street cops with very good sense. Congrats on DPDs handling of this guy, and I hope that they uncovered and disrupted some plot. At least the bad folk'll have to get a few more licenses and plates now that they've lost these.
quote:As for the investigation, (Detroit Police Spokes'person' James) Tate said: “Right now we can’t say exactly what we’re looking at.”
But the Immigration official was quoted as saying "We are all working together"...and that IS reassuring...except for the fact that he felt compelled to say it at all. |

Gannon needs a fact check Mauritian society is highly multicultural. Island residents are the descendants of people from the Indian subcontinent, continental Africa, Madagascar, France, England, China plus a few other places. The official language of Mauritius is English. French dominates the media and business, radio and television, despite France having lost its colonial dominion over the island nearly 200 years ago. The French-derived Mauritian Creole, with major influences from the other dialects, is widely spoken (80%) on the island and is considered the lingua franca of the country. Several other languages, including Arabic, Indian languages such as Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Gujarati or dialects of Chinese like Cantonese, Hakka and Mandarin are also spoken. The latter South Asian languages are spoken by descendants of the labourers brought from British India during the British rule. The Indo-Mauritians (when the ethnic groups are combined) form approximately 70% of the total population, while the rest of the population is of either African, French, Chinese, or mixed descent. There are approximately 30,000 Mauritians of Chinese descent, from Hakka, Mandarin and Cantonese language groups. More than 90% of the Sino-Mauritian community adhere to the Roman Catholic faith. Of all religiously affiliated Mauritians, Hindus constitute 52%, while the remainder is composed mostly of Christians (28%) and Muslims (16.6%). Buddhists (2.5%), Sikhs (0.3%) and other religions are also followed.[1] Mauritus is not considered a muslim nation... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M auritius |

From the Free Press article: "A 32-year-old illegal immigrant from Mauritania, an Islamic Republic in North Africa...." From Wikipedia: "Mauritania, officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in northwest Africa." |

Excellent Mikeg We seem to have an two countries with similar names: Mauritania and Maurtitus One is a country on Africa's west coast, the other is an island nation on Africa's east coast. We have all learned something about Africa today... |

About 10 years ago, I attended a 4 week educational program that included business professionals from around the world and from various business sectors. One of the participants was a banker of Chinese ancestry from Mauritius and on the first day, she began her personal introduction with an explanation of where her country was located and how it was often confused with Mauritania. |

Hey, the reason I posted the article is that it was FULL of fact-check errors...and was relatively poorly written, with some glaring follow-up questions either NOT asked...or the answers NOT given and then not mentioned in the piece. That is why I thought we'd get some serious follow-up over the next few days. Man can hope... |

Albania, Albania,Mauritania, Mauritania, you border on the Adriatic Atlantic. Your land is mostly mountainous arid plains, and your chief export is chrome iron ore. Cheers |

Are we innocent until proven guilty in this country? Histeria seems to be in the air. I'm not saying we shouldn't use due caution. How many people have maps in their car? If you lived in three different states in the last year, would you likely have more than one license plate in your possesion. Maybe he kept them as a souvenir! This guy is more than likely a scam artist or crook trying to out run the law. |

That was WHY I originally noticed the story!! We're laughing, but this dumb luck coupled to a couple of savvy DETROIT police officers might've derailed something. Probably did. |

Gannon - You have the freedom of expression and your using it. I will fight for freedom any day of the week. My concern is that our freedoms are being diminished through fear and prejudice. The lynch mob mentality scares me more than the threat of terrorism. |
