From Crain's news alert:

quote:

The trial of former Detroit City Councilman Alonzo Bates on federal charges of mail and bank fraud and failure to file income-tax returns began Tuesday with Bates pleading guilty to the four misdemeanor income-tax charges. . . . He can be sentenced up to one year in prison and fined $100,000 on each of those counts.

Ah, Lonnie . . . why are we not shocked, shocked?

From rest of Crain's bulletin:

quote:

Bates was indicted Nov. 15, 2005, by a federal grand jury in Detroit on charges that he paid phantom employees more than $91,000 between 2002 and 2004. He also was charged with four counts of mail fraud, four counts of theft from the city of Detroit, one count of extortion and one count of bank fraud.

Jury selection for trial on the remaining 10 felony counts continued before U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts.

Bates, also a former Detroit School Board member, was defeated for re-election to the City Council last November.

With the way the soon-to-be procecutor witnesses have taken deals and squealed, it's going to be real hot for Lonnie for several weeks here. It's good to see a crooked politician going down in flames for once.

Any word on Jackie Currie and her legal action? She's another screw up who needs to be tarred and feathered.

Here's from day two of the Bates trial. I feel bad for this lawn mowing guy. Sounds like he was trying to do the right thing for once in his life and a politician pulled him into another mess of illegal activity without the full knowledge of the crap he was getting into.

The champagne is in my fridge...
