A Hamtramck icon. They will be in the burbs soon, closing memorial weekend. 56 years in the same location, not sure what the story is, if they were sold, or what? |

Oh man!! When we were kids at QofA (Queen of Apostles Grade School (which is now, I think, Hamtramck Academy)) we loved that place for lunch! I still think their fries were some of the best. I will admit, though, that the last time we were in there, about 4-5 years ago, it was starting to look a bit seedy and rundown. Still sad to lose another old-time institution. |

We discovered Jeanie's Wienie's a couple years ago and stop by every so often to support a neighborhood institution. It won't be the same if they move to the suburbs!!! |

Any idea where they are moving to?? They would sell a lot of wienies in a place like Downtown Royal Oak - I know it is not Hamtramck, my whole family is from there, but from a business profit point of view, they probably needed to move to stay viable. |

Their hot dogs are the best ever. So were their match books. Each match was a little hot dog. I dunno if they still have those though. |

Lately the've been closing long before 2am and this hurts since a pretty good portion of their business was the bar crowd. |

I was a supporter of Genie's Wienies for years and years. I even remember when John owned the Coney Island on the SE corner of Gallagher and Davison. But, I was in there about 2 weeks ago and it was the biggest disappointment ever! I ate two bites and the hotdogs were boiled and still cold in the middle, the chili was as gooey as glue and the buns were old and stale. I tried to mention it to the waitress/cook but she couldn’t be bothered because she was trying to shut up some screaming kid that was having a temper tantrum. So, I asked how much, she told me and I payed and left without eating another bite as she asked me, “Where are you going you haven’t eaten your dogs or drink.” I said, “You figure it out!” And, that was the last I ever planned to go there!” But, you know I’ve been to more bad Coney Island joints lately than good ones. About a week ago I went to Lafayette Coney Island and the food was terrible and the prices were outrageous. I had two dogs and a coke and it was like $12.00+/-. I told them that since they were a Detroit Institution and that I was a plank owner in the city of Detroit that I had a vested interest in them serving good Coney Islands at a fair price. And they looked at me, spoke in a language I couldn’t understand to each other and said “Get the hell ata he!” What can I say, “I get no respect for the good marketing consultation I give them.” But, I am also running into some of the best Coney Island and Loose Hamburgers you can find anywhere in of all places Brighton. There is a places called Lucas Coney Island on Grand River just West of US23 and then there’s a great Coney Island on Old US 23 just South of Grand River called Grecian Gardens with outstanding Dogs and Looses! Loved me those Boston Coolers at Genie's. The coneys were much better than Lafayette and American - better buns and plumper weenies. Great atmosphere as well, sad to see it go. |

Not Genie's! I remember back in the good old days when my friends and I would shoot pool and drink beer across the street at Good Times(which is now an Indian restaurant)until 2AM, then go over to Genie's Wienies before heading home. |

you are right, Livedog, the Lucas Coney Island in Brighton is great!! 2 dogs and a coke are certainly not $12 at Lafayette. Their prices are very reasonable |

Still, you have to admit it's common these days to pay upwards of $2 for a coney... the traditional price being 99 cents. Once in awhile, a coney joint will offer coneys on special at 99 cents now. I had lunch at Lafayette just recently. The coneys were good. We were a party of four... we had five coneys, two orders of fries, and two soft drinks... and the bill was about $25. I used to go to Genie's Wienies a lot when I lived in Hamtramck. Sad to see it go and become a part of that vast Macomb County wasteland. (Message edited by Fury13 on August 22, 2006) |

The coney joint at Caniff and Lumpkin in Hamtramck still has .99 coneys. They're no Genie's Wienies though. |

I wouldn't be too quick to eat at that place, either, regardless of whether they're a Genie's Wienies or not. I don't know if it's the location or something else, but no incarnation lasts for more than a few months. Kola Bob was the closest to make a go of it about 4 years ago, but he kept smoking the night's profits instead of paying the bills. |

Do you folks also remember Old Mill bar which was further north on Conant, near Carpenter? They made a wicked bar burger. Last I saw, it's now a Mosque - strange change of business... |

Old Mill rocked for fish on Fridays during Lent. People were lined up out the door to pick up their carry-out orders until the very end. The folks running the place simply got too old and wanted to enjoy retirement. How about Golan's on Conant further down? He was an awesome guy. |

Good to know that the Freep reporters are out on the beat, walking the streets, digging up their own stories, breaking their own news, instead of relying on pedestrians posting on an Internet forum to inform them of what's happening in the city they supposedly cover. |

"A lot of Hamtramck people have moved to the northeast," Cieslak said. "We've decided to bring it a little closer to them." OR "We're really only interested in serving white people." Fuck 'em. Their coney's are OK, but Lafayette blows their doors off. |

I remember that mean old waitress named Stella who had to have been 90 years old. I remember sitting there as a little kid and wondering why old people were always so mean... I still miss their shrimp. It was always a big deal to go back to Hamtramck and the Old Mill Bar, drive past my dad's old house and visit St. Florians. |

It doesn't show on the jpeg, but on the bottom it says Hamtramack Heights, which I guess is the north side of Carpenter. I found some old newspapers lining the bottom of some old boxes, in the basement. I going to search for more old Citizens. |

I LOVE Genies Wenies. They have the best looseburgers, fries in a cup (chilli and shredded cheese on top), yummy! My family and I are known by our first names there. Because it walking distance from where I was raised. Its sad that the owner(Gene) is sick, he was very nice. I believe that his brother is operating the place. I hate to see my favorite coney island go. Where else can you go to find the best home-made chilli and where else can you go where the people are so friendly every time you walk in those doors? |

Actually Hamtramck Heights is a term that I think (thought?) my Dad originated. It's Detroti with a Hamtramck zip code - 48212. |

It's unlikely that your dad originated the term. "Hamtramck Heights" has been used for decades to refer usually sardonically to various places, ranging from the stretch of Gallagher between Casmere and Commor, to the area of Detroit between Carpenter and 6 Mile, even to the Grosse Pointes, since Hamtramck Township let them break away in the 1800's. |
