The freep reports that Jack White's Indian Village home is for sale.

He obviously couldn't handle all the crime

Here is the link to the house and its history.

Is it me or is Jack White looking a lot like Don Knotts?????

This is down the street from me.

I think it's a bit rash to say it's the crime that's made him move. I think he's into some hick scene right now...is all.

Meg is still our neighbor though.

Speaking of Jack White leaving the city, I saw The Raconteurs at Lollapalooza, and was irritated at the fact that during their performance, Brendan Benson (Guitar and Vocals) and a Detroiter mind you, stopped looked at Jack White and said, “We are The Raconteurs and we hail from Nashville, Tennessee.” Mind you the band has 4 members, and had a keyboardist from Michigan playing with them, in my book 5 members, 3 of whom are from MI, 2 from Detroit.

I felt a little let down. I know the Detroit rock influence made Jack White who he is, and for a few moments I was bothered.

I thought their performance was great. They covered a David Bowie tune, Nancy Sintra’s Bang Bang You shot me Dead, and Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy (which I thought was way better then the original) along with the best tracks off their album. It was one of the highlights of the festival, but I still felt somewhat cheated.

Anyway, what a beautiful house!

WHITE, JOHN A III
16000 VENTURA BLVD #600
ENCINO, CA 91436

2006 Summer Tax bill was $17,314.38! Ouch! However he bought it on 03/28/2003 for $524,000.00

$1 deeds are used to hide the true purchase price from prying eyes. With just a little more detective work the News could have unearthed the actual purchase price.

Yeah Aram, your right cheated might be a bit strong, but it did give me a weird feeling that they were so deliberate about it. I mean he paused in his sentence, stopped looked at Jack White, and then said Nashville.

Maybe not cheated, but I was looking forward to some Detroit pride.

Jack's been deliberately making subtle but public barbs about Detroit since moving to Nashville. Seems he's developed a big head since moving to Music City. I've scratched him off my list of favorite bands with the stuff I've read over the past few months.

Does the music change just because he says things about Detroit that you don't like? Does that automatically go back, record pure crap on the master tapes, and then somehow change every CD or LP they've ever sold?

Come on. We've all read the things Jack White has said about Detroit, and all of it can be interpreted about a thousand different ways. Who the hell cares what he says? That's just thin-skinned "rah-rah Detroit!" bullshit. If it's a good record, it's a good record. He could say he's from the North Pole and that wouldn't change shit.

True, good music is good music no matter what the artist says in public that might piss people off. But still, I can see why someone would be pissed off when native Detroiters like Jack White and Brendan Benson are saying they're from Nashville when they're in front of a Detroit audience. Next thing ya know, they'll start faking Tennessee accents the way Madonna is faking her British accent. (Remember her? She used to be from around here, too.)

But they didn't say this in front of a Detroit audience- Lollapalooza is in Chicago.

Part of the music, and what helped shape the White Stripes sound, is Detroit. The whole of it: the good, the bad, the people, the buildings, the culture, etc. The White Stripes would not have sounded the way they do if they started in Nashville.

Likewise Jack White would be no body if he'd started the White Stripes in Nashville, LA, NY, etc. The White Stripes would have been just another band.

So no, the music itself hasn't changed. But the story behind the music that added to it's greatness has changed. I'll keep my White Stripes CDs, but I don't plan on buying any new ones to support Jack and his pompous attitude.

I'll bet the realtor ends up having to paint over the red, white & black color scheme.

With a $900k plus price tag, it might be hard to get someone in that price range (who can afford the $20K Detroit taxes)who happens to like Jack's candy-stripe color palette.

That's a beautiful home. But 900K plus taxes, utilities and maintenance? Good luck

I could probably live with the red striped decor, but I would definitely have to do something about those puke-green walls in that bedroom.

I see references to urban crime, burglaries etc. Gotta dial in. When I lived in Redford Twp. People taking things from the yard, porch and cars was a regularly annoying occurrence. A work friend who lived a block over had none of these problems. I figured out my misfortune was due to the home being on a corner lot, kids would walk by the house to and from school and get a good look at what we had. I now live in an east side suburb, I have no issues, although I see in the local paper that some neighbors have had problems, including bikes stolen from the porch, break ins where the perpetrator seems to know exactly to look for the jewelry and cash; makes me wonder if some people are entertaining individuals they shouldn’t be. I remember as a kid in Southfield, all the neighborhood’s crime was attributed to one of my so called friends. He would befriend you, come over scope out your parents house and break in while everyone was gone. I just thought I'd share that. Some of the messages start sounding like property crimes or crime in general is just a Detroit problem, not true. It's all about the three triangle diagram of crime. I know two sides were opportunity and desire. I can't recall what the third side was, but suffice it to say, if you remove any side of the triangle, you won't have crime. Also do you respect the neighborhood? Scotty Simpsons a white owned and frequented restaurant has been in Brightmoor for fifty six years. There has never been a burglary or any other type of crime there ever! They are grateful for all their customer’s no matter where they are from and let them know it.

Is it any of these? http://www.detroitoldhouse.com /boston_edison.htm

I'm curious as to how big his house was. Albert Kahn's house on Mack Ave., and Robert O. Derrick's house on Ridge in Grosse Pointe Farms are both much smaller and, in Derrick's case, simpler, than the homes they would design.

interesting stats on that link....there are 13 houses for sale listed in a range beginning at $300K and stretching up to 1 million+. In the past 3 years, only one house has sold in the neighborhood for more than 300K and that was for 365K (and that was in '04). Talk about a buyer's market, particularly for those houses sitting on the high end of that range.

Mackinaw, I don't know the address right off. It's on the north side of Boston Blvd. between Hamilton and the Lodge. It's a red brick, colonial-revival style, center entrance house. It's, to me, a good-looking substancial house with ideal proportions for the windows, entrance portico, and dormers. However, the house is not nearly the size, nor to the standards, of Jack White's house.

That is a great house, and a nice website. I had originally heard that he had painted all of the rooms red, but there's actually a good mix of interior colors. I like the brown, green, etc. (Of course I hate houses where every single room is painted off-white, ugh.)

The red-and-white-striped tile may be a bit much, but it is only a basement bathroom, and that obvious Jack White-ism adds a bit of character to the home. (Not that the house doesn't already have plenty of character.)

The price seems a bit high given the current market, but you never know.

Annual property taxes about $19,500. WOW. A similarly valued house here would carry annual property taxes of about $6,500-7,000.

I don't know Jack White from Jack Shit... who's Jack White, and why are y'all making such a big ta'doo over someone that not everyone is familiar with?? Who are the Raconteurs? Geeze don't tell me I was in Europe the month they became famous??

I mean you're not talkin' about Eminem, Madonna, Aretha, Kid Rock or any other local who is ACTUALLY famous?? So why the fuss?

(Of course to put it into perspective... I was just at a gas station where the clerk told a young kid in front of me that he looked a lot like Ricky Ricardo.... and the kid replied "Who's Ricky Ricardo?...) :-(

I think Jack White's Detroit disenfranishment is just his way of fucking with his fans. There is a lot about the Jack White persona that looks like it was lifted from Bob Dylan's early career. The whole Jack and Meg siblings or spouses thing wasn't all that different from Dylan's wandering orphan shtick he tried to pass off early in his career. White's distancing himself from Detroit, Dylan's efforts to not only break away from the folk scene but alienate the crusty old Folkies. White going to Nashville and forming a new group, Dylan's Nashville Skyline album.

The best part is so many people fell for it then with Dylan and now with Jack White. Say what you will about both but they are showmen and they get your attention.

You're an idiot babe, it's a wonder that you still know how to breathe - Bob Dylan

How the hell can ANYONE afford property taxes like that? You could love everything about the city, the house, be willing to put up with the bad, but taxes like that would make me (and most others) run like hell.

That is ABSURD.

Being involved in the Detroit rock of the Bookies/Freezer era, it definitely had its camaderie and consolidated struggle against lousy clubs, radio's feign enthusiasm, music industry neglect, and most importantly the boredom and vacancy of the city. Often you would play a gig and the folks in the audience would be friend's and members from other bands. It was a big boost and important consolation for lack of a large audience. Having a couple of fellow musicians whose sound you enjoyed at your show at least told you that you were on the right track. Always think of that opening scene in "24-Hour Party People" where the Sex Pistols are playing in front of a few people in Manchester but those few folks in the audience would go on to form the Buzzcocks, Joy Division and Industrial Records.

Often this stuff is just taken for granted when artists become successful and they move on, but Jack White at the start of his success did a lot more for his fellow musicians than other similiar scenes in rock music. A lot of people took this to heart, while others complained and sniped at his efforts.

The analogy to Dylan is apt. Not only was his departure from Detroit a break with his early fan base but just as important was his recording of a Coca-cola commercial. Normally an artist doing this would be no big deal, but early White was frantic about not singing "Fire at the Taco Bell" even as backup or under a false name. It seems White didn't want to role play anymore with all the expectations of being an indie musician. It was a break of character and part of Jack White's early character that he adopted was tied to this creative industrial noise Freemason-like craziness that can be associated with part of Detroit's heritage.

No matter what the environment, Jack White is a talented songwriter and he'll continue to pen songs, but what I felt to an interesting play and persona is over for him. It remains to be seen if he can create something as captivating.

Hope this answers the question why certain forum posters think Jack White's departure is revelant and often news on this forum.

Actually, with the new tax break, our millage in IV will be lower than Ferndale's. How do you like that? Better homes and cheaper taxes.

A real coincidence is that Jack's brother Leo's house is also for sale and is also a notable house:
