I am in Detroit for a long weekend, and tomorrow is a bit of a special day for my long time GF and me. I decided kinda last minute that I would like for us to go out for a fun little dinner. Then I came realize that because I haven't been around much over the past 1.5 years that I don't even know all the decent places from which to choose. Like I said, it doesn't need to be anything fancy, just a place with a decent food, decent atmosphere, where the two of us can enjoy the time. Decent value would be good too. The two of us have always liked Small Plates, which is what I was originally considering. Been to Coach Insignia, but not looking to spend so much. Also liked Intermezzo. Been to Slows several times. So, what I'm looking for is something similar to any of those places with the criteria above. What new is out there worth looking at? Please no bars/ bar-food type thing. Its gotta at least be a bit classier ;) I appreciate it! |

I've got to confess, "The Woodward" was terrible for my girlfriend and I. Further more the main reason it was bad (the server) was highlighted as being great by the Metro TImes! I could not believe it! The guy is a total clown and he was considered an asset in the Metro Times.....I think its because the reviewer can never bring himself to every give a negative review. Anyway he started off braging about the cost of the light fixtures and how the place was owned by a former Lion, then we had to help our server with the beer menu, he promised samples and free portions of things that never came, he'd touch us, he balbered about working in Greektown with a huge rat at the restaurant, he was slow..........in short it was as if he was jacked on cocaine and was about as unproffesional as possible. My girl's Samlon was as bland as they come, while also missing the hummus it was supposed to have. But my steak was pretty darn good. |

I fourth Atlas. Get a table near a window...great food, service and value. On a side note...ever think of Windsor? Great places over there at an excellent value...I'd recommend two italian places: Casalinga http://www.lacasalinga1.com/ and Pasta Shop/Cook Shop http://foodpages.ca/PastaShop Bon Appettite |

I really enjoyed the Woodward, good food and a nice atmosphere, also and you can sit outside if the evening is nice and take a walk to the Campus Martius afterwards. |

Hmmm... okay. Well I think we'll give the Woodward a try. Do they have a website? Hopefully the wind dies down a little bit. It would be nice to sit outside. Thanks for the suggestions! |

Vas, I had Pablo as a waiter at another restaurant before. I would agree with you. I have a friend that works at that place and had some interesting but not kind words about him. Lets just say that the guy doesn't sound that stable, and may be very different from day to day or week to week. Either way, I think everybody could agree with calling him a "character." |

We did make it to the Woodward last night. I would say my overall experience was good to very good. The atmosphere was just what I was looking for and we had a wonderful waitress (Patty I think was her name). She was incredibly friendly and very helpful with questions about the meals. The prices were spot on. Very reasonable in my book. The downer was the food was average too good at best. I had the salmon sandwich wich was actually rather plain and unfortunately just didn't really hit me like I had hoped. The fries were a little too soggy. My GF had the slightly blackend grilled salmon with garlic mashed potatoes. Her dish was actually pretty good, but there was *something* missing from the salmon. The bit of spice was nice, but again, is seemed just a little bit eh. I feel like I've made tastier salmon at home, and I'm NO gourmet cook. But all in all, I think i would go back and recommend it. Remembering the pricing was reasonable and the atmosphere very nice with great service makes up for the somewhat okay food. I would likely choose Small Plates over it, however. Great food with a very cool experience as well, even if the decor and friendliness aren't as good. |

I have one question about The Woodward. Do people dress up at night, because I was considering it for a night out with my girlfriend but I wanted to go somewhere where casual, like jeans and a nice shirt, was usual for everybody.Let me know. |

The best salmon: Costco. It comes with Herb butter, and you bake it at home. GOD I MISS THAT SALMON!!!! It was cheap and easy. We would even put it on the Ceasar salad that you picked up in the same case as the salmon. Sometimes we would get the salmon stuffed with crab. I think I need to come home just to cook that dinner. Jeff...got an oven I can use? |
