I know this isn't necessarily a Detroit issue, but the Crow's Nest was a traffic control device that was used in and around Detroit prior to the advent of the tri-color traffic signal. The Crow's Nest was located at Nine Mile and Woodward Ave. It was created when Woodward and Nine were both dirt roads and were too narrow at that intersection for a police officer to stand safely and direct traffic. The Crow's Nest was designed to raise the officer up off the street and able to safely direct traffic. I'll have some pics up before the end of the day hopefully, but it was a GREAT unveiling and is something all Metro-Detroiters should come take a look at. |

Sorry, this is the pre-unveiling picture, my digicam died right at the unveiling. Good thing I work at 9 and Woodward, so the cam is charging and i'll some more pics in a few hours after lunch. http://static.flickr.com/90/21 2575624_9808d594cf.jpg?v=0 (I haven't figured out how to put the picture in my actual post, if anyone can instruct me, that'd be great. :-) |

Mcpd1300, the pixel size of your photo is postable, but you'll have to reduce the quality of the jpeg so that it is less than 50k. I don't know what program you're using, but in most you'll do a save as jpeg and you'll set the quality of it you want, or there may be a dialog box or settings for jpegs. You'll probably have to set it as low or poor to get it down in kb size. Then do the old upload attachment box next to the preview post. |

Nope. It was created by a Cranbrook artist. http://www.hometownlife.com/ap ps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060 811/NEWS/608110310/1035/NEWS18 (Message edited by FerndaleGuy76 on August 11, 2006) |

Looks like a nice touch for the area and just in time for the Woodward Cruise. Also, Psip, Ford Motor Company had lots of traffic control towers around their plants and properties to help avoid gridlock when the plants let out for the day. Ford also staggered their shift start and end times so the number of cars entering streets from the plants was more spread out. At my plant there was a 3:12pm to 11:42pm shift. |

Saw the crow's nest today for the first time. I think it's cute, but it looks tiny compared to the ones in the old photos posted above. (Love the photos, BTW. Thanks for posting them, Hornwrecker.) |

Due to the positive press that the Ferndale crow's nest is receiving in the press, the City of Detroit counters Ferndale with a crow's nest of their own. Editor's note: The current budget crisis in Detroit only enabled Ferguson Construction to complete the footings for the crow's nest, as that part of it exceeded the amount of the two million dollar contract that was awarded for construction. It is hoped that the rest of the crow's nest will be completed with petty cash from the Property Tax Dept, when and if it is ever found. |

Hornwrecker - re: the last photo you posted. That lamp looks just like the ones Adams & Westlake (AdLake) used to manufacture for the railroads to use on their switch stands (for the uninitiated, lamp could show several diff. colors (red, yellow, green, lunar (white), blue (protection of workmen)) to show which way the track was lined). I've seen quite a few on eBay for RR applications, but I wonder if any for "street" use have ever showed up there? I imagine they would go for quite a bit of $$$$ if in good shape! Railroads also used similar crow's nests for RR crossing attendants, although they were usually bigger and higher off of the ground than traffic police ones. Here's an enlargement of the lamp, maybe it'll help in id-ing it. I seem to remember that Buhl Stamping made kerosene lanterns back when they started business, along with milk cans. |

That looks exactly like an Adlake lamp! The base would be different for a RR app., but otherwise it is a spitting image of an Adlake. I think Buhl made things for RR's, too, but I can't seem to find anything right off hand that would confirm (that company name sounds familiar in some of the things I have & have seen that are RR related). Thanks for the blow-up, Hornwrecker! |

I finally found the crappy, old photo of the Buhl Stamping factory with top sign: "Tubular Lanterns", the vertical says Buhl Stamping Co., and the lower painted sign begins with "Largest Manufacturer of..." who knows what, maybe milk cans.
