Free Press: $200 gets Detroiters a vacant lot http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20060802/NEW S01/608020427/1003/NEWS I think i'm the first to post this. My favorite line is at the end "But I'm not paying $200 for something I've maintained. ... I don't think it's fair." Wow, I didn't realize $200 was too much to ask for some land. |

I think this is a great program... always have. No better people to take care of vacant lots than those that have to look at them every day. Most other communities would have to fight off the requests for a similar program for $2,000 or even $20,000 to buy vacant lots. Then again, those communities probably don't own 20,000 of them. |

Adding an additional lot will barely effect your taxes. Extra land will hardly move your SEV value. The value's in the house, not the land in the city of Detroit. There's way too much available land. The real issue will be getting clear title to the property. |

the lady is mad at spending $200 to acquire the lot. I guess thats a lot better than the city getting her for trespassing and planting shit in a lot she does not own. I would maintain a lot next to my house and I would know that it is not mine so I can't be mad @ paying $200 for something I don't own but want to.... |

Great idea, whats $200 to double your land holdings? It seems that the media, be it print or video, always choose the stupidest sounding people to quote. I wonder how many residents they had to interview before they found someone who would bitch about such a cheap price. |

I think its a media rule or something... for every good thing, you must find a negative point or person to speak to. If it's a bad idea, don't find a good point or person to speak to... |

You have to admit it makes the story more interesting if a stupid person is quoted, rather than someone normal. ($200 is obviously more than a fair price.) |

This is a program that is fantastic. They mentioned something like this was done in the Archer administration. Wonder why it hasn't been going on since then. The city needs to be more creative with plans like this. |

I remember Baltimore had something like this in their darker days, except it was 1$ a lot. It was quite successful. (Message edited by illmatic774 on August 02, 2006) |

Does the County have the same policy? There is a lot (25 x 100) I'm trying to obtain but I've been told the County owns it and they want something like $2,500 for it. |
