The state needs to make up its freaking mind already. Over the last 10 years they've introduced so many new license plates, it's getting hard to keep track of them (not to mention I've heard of witnesses of accidents/crimes having a hard time being able to tell if the vehicle has a MI plate or not). There's the classic blue one, the centennial of the automobile, the bridge, the various university plates, and now this one. I personally like the blue ones, or the bridge, but pick one and stay with it already. Wouldn't it make more sense to focus on new drivers licenses over license plates? I was on vacation for a few weeks out of state, and everytime I walked into a bar to try and watch a Tigers' game, it wasn't uncommon for the barkeep to comment about how my MI license looks plain, and almost fake compared to others (especially MA and NH). It would seem to me that forgery of drivers license would be more widespread a problem as well as a more lucrative blackmarket. |

Definitely a much better plate... I think it's very refreshing, and yes I LOVE the skyline of Detroit finally being included on our plates. Regarding our drivers licenses, they have a number of built-in safety devices. Now, i'm not saying that they can't be fraudulently recreated, but any educated person can distinguish a real one and a fake one. Between the blacklight images and the words "Michigan" hidden in the Mighty Mac, i think our drivers licenses, albeit "plain", get the job done. |

its 16 in most countries in Europe... they have much less incidents of alcahol related crime as well. they cant change the law to 16 because the federal government mandates to the states that the drinking age must be 21 for them to recieve federal highway funds.... no state in its right mind is going to not want to get their money back that the government takes from them. |

Love the new plates, lets hope this is the last new one for many years. I am starting to have a collection of plates from the last 10 years. Everytime I buy a new car, I need a new plate to keep up with the new designs! Also love that Detroit is well represented. Think any out-staters will have a problem with that, especially in the GR area? |

Don't think anyone in the west side will care. My father who lives in Kazoo seems to like it. After all Detroit is Michigan and vice versa to all Michiganders in some way. Except maybe those in tha UP eh? I think it would be much better with more blue in it, oh yeah vizon is right, drop that silly motto. It should say "welcome to Michigan, don't worry we hate you too." |

^^^Hagglerock is right. And the pine trees basically cover everything that is between Detroit and Mackinac, and beyond. The only critical omission is the mcmansion subdivision. It is a defining characteristic on the modern Michigan landscape. |

You should live here in Florida where we have 103 different plates. What about a Tigers plate? Lions? Red Wings? My neighbor has a Miami Heat plate that I wanted to pry off his car, but it DOES look cool. And you should see the Lennon plate we have. The color is not very attractive, but hey it's Lennon. http://www3.hsmv.state.fl.us/I ntranet/dmv/specialtytags/a.cf m?id=146 I DO like the Detroit reference in this plate, but it could do without the "spectacular" part. |

Yes they will. The standard, lowest-cost plate will remain available. All of the decorative and commerative ones are more money. However, I saw a quote which said that in January they will switch the standard to white with blue letters. |

The day I am required to purchase a plate with any sort of designer pattern is the day I stop driving. The logic behind these kind of plates is that they promote tourism. I don't work in the tourism industry yet they want me to pay extra to purchase a plate that will advertise for said industry? Seems to me they should be paying me to affix that plate to my car. It is like those stupid t-shirts that advertise the store where they were purchased (Gap, etc) why am I paying to advertise your product? So hear is my offer...for an annual payment of $200 I will affix a plate with your organizations logo to my car. Wal-Mart, the Five Percenters, the Humane Society, GM, Canine to Five, the United Fascist Union it doesn't matter. First come first served. |

I'm glad they got the proportions right on the Mackinac Bridge towers. The towers on the Great Lakes Splendor plates are really crude-looking. But the trees don't look much like eastern white pine (the state tree). They should be more elongated, with trunks visible. |

I think it's horrible, even if it is an optional plate. Why does it show Ontario on there? BTW, these new plates are being printed with what is called digital flat printing. The tag is printed on, not embossed like before. And yes it's true, the old Lake Superior blue plate will be replaced also. They are reversing the color scheme on those: white plates with blue alphanumeric characters. At first mention, it sounds horrible but I'll wait and see how it looks. Another rant about MI plates...several years ago (2002?) I paid extra for the Olympic plate. When I received it in the mail, it was just a sticker on the plate! Nowadays, it's actually embossed right onto the plate. I paid extra for a sticker! Rant off. http://www.15q.net/usindex.htm l |

I know I was being nitpicky with the trees, but I've always paid attention to the trees around me...As for why Ontario is visible, it seems that this plate follows the trend established by the Michigan quarter: an almost default insistence that all of the Great Lakes' outlines be visible. And that looks a bit like a tidal wave approaching the Mackinac Bridge! I still like this plate better than Great Lakes Splendor or that 100-year automobile anniversary plate with the cheesy-looking car. But if given a choice I'd keep using my blue one. The blue plate is a no-nonsense, no-bullshit, instantly recognizable plate that has done its job well for 23 years. Its simple directness can be looked at as reflecting the industrial heritage of the state. |

Grand Rapids is represented in the top left corner by one of those buildings (those aren't all Detroit scrapers). If they replace the classic blue by reversing the colours, then that would mean the Michigan plate would look just like Ontario's - bad move considering Ontario has the dullest plate in North America. |

There are worse things one could be forced to think about than Spectacular Penis though. I mean, at least its better than Average Penis. Or, heaven forbid, Less Than Stellar Penis. If one is going to emblazon the status of their genitalia on a license plate, one should certainly say something positive. That said, I don't like the design, but I don't like most of the graphic ones. Simplicity is a virtue. |

The blue and white plate is a classic, I think. California's blue (or black) and gold plates of the 60s still show up in commercial art. Not totally discounting the effort of the art class that designed the new plate, I don't see this plate as outstanding. |

It's a reflection issue for police and others with the old blue and white plate. The white isn't reflective. I don't know why they just couldn't make the white reflective...at least this is what I heard when I went to get new plates (I got the old blue n white) this year for another hand me down vehicle. |

California's old black and gold (yellow) plates still survive on some hoopties. In CA, the plate stays with the car forever. So if a car was registered in 1956, it still has the black plates on it, transferred from owner to owner to owner to ad nauseam. Also, a California plate gives one permission to drive like an idiot, but that's another story. |

One of the reasons that the old blue and white plates are being taken out of service is that the reflective paint in white is highly toxic. It is being phazed out for cost reasons becasue no one uses this white paint anymore and its cost has risen as less people use it. Think replacing freon in an air conditioner. |

And, they couldn't simply use another paint? |

They could just discontinue them and let people continue to use the plates that are already out there. This state sucks, its the little things like this that make people mad. I know its just a plate, but why should I be forced into changing mine out? |

I'm wondering what the lines at the Sec of State's office will be like when we ALL have to go get new plates. I don't like going there as it is to wait over an hour for simple registration things. |

Are the cops having trouble reading the blue plates, or just trouble bouncing their laser off them? |

I just read in the paper that this license plate is to replace the Michigan Splendor plate. This isn't the "new" plate to replace the good old Blue and White. |

There's going to be a different new plate to replace the "good old blue and white", it's going to be a white backround with, I believe, blue text. They claim it's more visible. |

Just as long as they get rid of those annoying "Children - Just Love 'Em" plates. Now before someone jumps all over me - I do know that proceeds from the sale of those plates go to state supported groups to prevent child abuse and neglect (which I'm all for) - but I think the slogan is a little ridiculous and rhetorical. Maybe I'm bitter because I ran out of coffee. End of rant. Also - has anyone else noticed that the Wayne State "W" looks like the Wu Tang Clan symbol? I think that's funny. Back to the topic...I like the new plate...albeit the "spectacular penninsulas" phrase (great Photoshop work Itsjeff - btw). At least the skyline of Detroit is represented along with themes of our other state treasures. In terms of the blue/white plate being phased out - I can take or leave it, but we should have some consistency... maybe 1 or 2 plates available. If the fuzz is going to complain about not being able to properly read plate numbers, isn't it also an impedement in trying to validate if it's a legit plate when there are so many variations? |

The spectacular peninsulas is a bit weird. I like Winter Water Wonderland or the like. The Enchanted Mitten (Mike Clark's fav)? I like my blue and white plate. Plain, simple and easy to recongnize. Why mess with success? |
