IN MY OPINION:

We took part in the 4th Friday last week and had a blast. How cool was that?

What was totally WAY not cool was 150 West Jefferson. Excuse the valley-girl reference...but I think it's appropriate.

After wandering around 4th Friday, we found a flyer that said the afterglow was going to be at this bar. So we went around midnight.

We were met with 4 or 5 big burley bouncers in black that, while not menacing (read not overly nice), make me feel uncomfortable. Where are we...some teen place in Novi? If there's one thing I hate is false pretension...like the owners are thinking "If we make the bar hard to get into, people will want to get in."

Mildly impressed with the interior, the 7 of us sat down to the bar. The place was empty except for two people at the extreme front of the room at a table and a couple at the other end of the bar.

We were not allowed to order drinks as a group...get this we had to pay separately for each drink! I had a vodka martini... $10. Come on people...This goes along with my feelings about false pretension...like the owners are thinking "If we charge more for the drinks our bar will look really cool and people will want to go there."

There were, I'd say 8 bartenders behind the bar just standing around.

Anyway, I was talking to my friend, we'll call her E, and remarking on her cleavage. She was proud of it. No doubt about it I'm a gay man. So I pulled her shirt down a tad to see if she could get more cleavage. SWOOP...big burley guys swarming in to tell me if I did that again I would be OUT OUT OUT. GEESH! It was a playful gesture, one we were both laughing at, but you’d think I threw a drink on her. Come on dude…I’m one of your only customers…I might buy another ridiculously marked up drinks. Or not.

Anyway...we stayed about an hour then left. Totally unremarkable bar…

What happened to good ‘ole fashioned good service at a reasonable price? Why go to so much trouble, pay so many people, and charge so much when you have just opened?

I’m sticking with my Buzz Bar for now…my mainstay (if any) since Third Street shut down.

And in that vein... I do have to add that I'm guessing if one chick touched another chicks cleavage the bouncers would not have threatened to throw you out... you know those places love some drunk girl on girl prentensions.

Byotch! Whatever itsjeff. Bounce me, bounce 7 people in a basically empty bar.

I hear you susanarosa. And yes sport, if the feeling overcame me I would do that at the buzz bar too.

Lets keep in mind...no nip shots...I pulled her shirt down max 1 inch to show 1 inch more clevage. No groping...very innocent.

But I digress...maybe I'm wrong wrong wrong.

PLUS $10 Martini...like,ew!

Sounds rather strange, Quinn (about the bar). First off, with that sort of location, it would seem like an after work (5pm drinks) sort of place. If it's late nite only place, then that is very strange. I agree, with the bouncers they're trying to make it look like some sort of serious club that must be packed with people.

Cafe's bathrooms suck, her bagels are stale, the bartender at the Well steals money, it costs $4 to sit by yourself at Eph Mcnally's, Honest John randomly bans people, and Mike Illitch is the devil.

Anything else?

Borders is way too small. All the rest are huge, but you put one in the D and it is tiny!

I want to wear jeans and a hat to the breakfast place on Woodward, but heard it is against the rules. I just won't go.

Merchant what is all that? Is hardrock really going under?

And yes the detroit breakfast place doesn't allow hats (don't know about jeans...I did wear them I think). It does fall into that category of trying to be really pretencious for all the wrong reasons.

Mackinnaw, I think my #1 pet peve with bars and clubs is that line of bouncers and check in people. That new bar across from Town pump (and now even town pump does this) employs a bunch of yucky bouncers. It's probably why I really enjoy Cliff Bells...and also why it's always busy and fun!

Given Quinn's complete lack of credibility, 150 W. Jefferson is probably the exact opposite of what he/she described, a good place. :-)

Have you ever seen the unstable homeless bums and crackheads that try to get into bars downtown? They disturb customers, ask for odd jobs, try to leech drinks, and what they are capable of doing to the bathrooms is unmentionable.

Shark...I've been to Cliff Bells probably 10 times since opening. Never a bouncer or check-in or cover charge person. And I've NEVER seen a bum trying to get in a bar downtown.

Honestly...not even the Comet where he'd fit in (not a slam...mind you I fit in at the Comet).

I think Mildred Gaddis has your face for a Pus$y metro...

Quinn/"Ilovedetroit" translation = I've never actually been to Cliff Bells, 150 W. Jefferson, Comet, etc. Furthermore, there was no group of friends (certainly not a woman that would let me touch her).

Hey I got an idea -- why don't both of you just shut the fuck up?

Or at least just don't respond to anything the other person has to say.

Is it that hard?

Nobody cares about your petty bickering.

Hey anyone have anything else to say that is related to this thread?

How about this: I think that Cliff Bells would make a great Drag Bar. Seriously...it's got that great stage with alot of height for head dresses and everything.

Quinn, you're a different kind of pirate, correct?

And how about not trying to push your lifestyle onto an established business?

Dabirch, other threads have also covered the potential harm that erroneous/overly critical posts can cause to a small business.

MDG --

I understand and agree that erroneous or overly critical posts can effect small business. And I agree with you, in theory, on that point.

However, between you and Quinn/ILD it is personal - and it does not matter what the position is, you will always be there throwing stones and kicking sand.

I am quite certain had Quinn paised the bar, you would've blasted that for some reason as well.

Hey that's your right, I am just saying, sometimes the most effective way to confront somebody is to take the high road, and just ignore whatever it is they have to say.

Ignore and move on, that is my advice.

Um, yeah, he already acknowledged that a million times. I know you are trying to make a funny, but, well, try harder.

As for pushing his "lifestyle" on an established bar ... well it's not like Cliff Bell's lacks a gay clientele, so I'm not sure much pushing is required.

And a number of gay people I know have commented on how great the setup would be for a drag show. Well except for the giant column blocking the center of the stage. That stage really would be good for that, it has the right amount of kitsch in a well-done way.

Personally, I think we are better served with the place the way it is, having seen how drag establishments tend to be in this town.

While gays are welcome I'm sure, I hardly think they wish to cross the line catering specifically to the gay patrons, thus driving away others. Perhaps to your surprise, most patrons there to enjoy drinks and jazz music wouldn't be hip to watching a drag show.

You got me pretty much figured out don't ya?

(Does Holy Redeemer have balconies? If so, that'd be sweet!)

Quite a few poles as well.

Lap dances in the confessionals?

No, you're confusing it with St. Florian's. They have the poles.

Wow...I am not sure if that was really funny and clever or about the worst non-jjaba joke ever made.

Thank you, thank you... don't forget to tip your waitress...

Probably the worst non-jjaba joke ever made... But I'm cool with it.

Ah I agree then...leave well enough alone. There are certainly other vacant venues that would serve the drag mafiosas better.

My point in this review was to 1. Discuss the new bar...who knows maybe other poeple think it's great and I'd like to hear about that (so far not a peep about it specifically) and 2. bitch about this trend i'm seeing with some new bars and restaurants where they act pretentious in a manner that makes me think the owners think that's how to run a successful business (and there have been posts talking about that thank you and you know who you are)

Irritates me. Argh...

On the contrary Dialh, try harder at being PC and self righteous. Quinn and his buddy "Ilovedetroit" (maybe the same person?) have "acknowledged" being various races, genders, sexual orientations, occupations, etc. Nice try.

Also, as SS already pointed out, there's a big difference between having a certain clientle, and changing formats to exclusively cater to that single minority clientle. Again, nice try.

Dabirch, agreed that it has gotten personal between myself and Quinn/"Ilovedetroit". However, keep in mind that I have presented facts to combat their erroneous claims/stories. I have also called them out on their erroneous claims/stories. They are the ones that often resort to name-calling, erroneous claims/stories, and disingenuous postings.

I disagree on your point about ignoring certain posts on this forum. As we all know, many people read this forum, including major media. One of their claims was so outrageous that it was picked up by the media. Therefore, on the contrary, bogus claims and matters of credibility should absolutely be raised.

And no I would not have commented had the review been positive. Sure in that case he/she could have had a connection to the place and was doing some bogus PR work, however, as I said, an overly negative review could be the exact opposite case.

While gays are welcome I'm sure, I hardly think they wish to cross the line catering specifically to the gay patrons, thus driving away others. Perhaps to your surprise, most patrons there to enjoy drinks and jazz music wouldn't be hip to watching a drag show.

Hi, back to remedial reading with you two. I said there were reasons why it'd be good as a drag bar but that it should stay the way it is.

There was nothing PC or self-righteous about my post. I am not even sure I am capable of being PC or self-righteous, and that statement leads me to wonder if you even know what that means.

I see that you're still trying Dialh. Try harder!
