I was on the island this morning and thought it looked great. The lawns were mowed and litter-free and Scott Fountain was on.

I play ball there on Saturday mornings and as I drive to the ball diamonds I'm constantly reminded of what a jewel it is. I really wish that we would take better advantage of the open spaces. Belle Isle is gorgeous beyond words and I really don't think people in the city utilize it as much as say New Yorkers take full advantage of Central Park (okay so it's easier to get to, but still!).

I actually preffer it with less people. It's pretty crowded in the morning. With the new bike lane people constantly walk, bike, and skate the wrong way!!

When I was over there last weekend a I saw tons of family reunions and a game of cricket (yes, cricket--and very official and organized looking) being played in the open space just east of Scott Fountain. I think Belle Isle is well utilized, despite having some of its finest attractions closed. Even the decrepit Boat Club is used by rowers.

Some people like it crowded and some people like it barren. Some people like red and some people like blue. Personally, I like it at midnight on Tuesday Morning when no one else is there.

I used to especially like it in winter after a decent snowfall. The place is nearly deserted, and you can hear a pin drop. The deer are also easier to see due to the winter wardrobe of the trees.

yeah

it is very cool in the dead of winter. I like the big snowdrifts along the northern exposure of the island...makes for good skyline photos.

Just got back from a bike ride around the island. People were partying hard, showing off their cars and blasting music. There was actually a traffic jam on the Windsor side of the island. There was tons of trash near the areas where people tend to picnic over the weekend. Does the city pick up after everyone every weekend? I have never seen it look so dirty - littler was literally all over the ground. (But I must say the new bike lane is great)

I went to the driving range this afternoon (1:30pm) and the Island looked awful. I was disappointed because I had just read this thread before I headed over there.

The aesthetics of the island can change in a heartbeat. All it takes is some trash to turn the appearance from positive to negative.

Pjazz......I often run the opposite way on the bike path so as to see the way-too-many jerks driving 50 mph and weaving in an out of lanes. The bike path to these idiots is merely a passing lane, regardless of runners, skaters or bikers. Sorry to be such a nuisance during your drive through the park.

There were several family reunions, events, hot weather folks and etc. this weekend at the 'Isle'( I notice many more people than usual this weekend) beside the normal crowd... I believe that's why it was more trash than a normal weekend...I notice that too, during my reqular runs on the Isle, especially by the athletic fields.

The funniest thing I saw, perhaps was the 10 or so 'hot&ready' empty pizza boxes sitting right next to the trash can! :-)

All in all, 'The Isle', is very well kept, considering the cities financial problems.

I figure most people want to see whats coming in there direction. I don't agree with the theory. It's the law to ride with traffic on the street. I guess we both just have to be careful.

I also hate to see all the trash it's usually cleaned up at the beginning of the week. People gathering bottles make alot of this mess. They turn garbage cans over just to look for returnables.
